Elderly individuals are more susceptible to severe symptoms of COVID-19.

 

Yes, but when the government is saying things like "You have 15 people, and the 15 within a couple of days is going to be down to close to zero" and "this is their new hoax" and people should use hydroxychloroquine to treat the virus or should "I see the disinfectant that knocks it out in a minute, one minute. And is there a way we can do something like that by injection inside or almost a cleaning?" critiquing the responses to coronavirus doesn't need to take much else into account.

 

That's a slippery stat. They are more likely to die, but I'm seeing much higher infection rates for younger people than were projected during the early days of this thing.

 

For all the people, and honestly I don't know how many there are, who are play now! Or have a summer camp now! Or whatever, there are just as many if not many more people who are unsure how to handle these summer activities. So if things move on as scheduled, how many back out anyway? I bet a ton, which maybe is good for these organizations because they can more safely operate, even at a loss, but things like leagues and teams are going to be scrambling to rearrange rosters and so on.

King is a good guy, but certainly driven by business (and to his credit he partially admits that). His plan may work for the more organized and competitive of teams but it won't work for most rec teams. You won't be able to keep kids apart or sanitize or anything else. You can maybe say we'll play with no fans but not sure how much beyond that works. Maybe social distancing in a dugout.

 

But is the government doing the right thing for all areas? That's fair. But my biggest critique about government's attempt to put policy into place to fight coronavirus is the fact the piece of government that should be coordinating our national response and has the tools to create a national response has been severely lacking. Opening too late, opening too soon, opening some things while forcing others that some want to be open to stay closed is the result of local governments trying to fight a war on two fronts: The virus and the national government's incompetence. We'll find that we overreacted in some areas and didn't do enough in others, but it will come down on Trump's bad combover.

Rt for COVID-19 is now below 1.0 in 48 states, with Maine and North Dakota hovering slightly above. One month ago, 21 states were above 1.0.

That is terrific news. Social distancing is paying off.

 

OK, but a lot of the deaths *are* there.

Much of America - and its leaders - are stuck on the total death toll and the "anyone who gets it could in theory die!" mantra to the exclusion of hammering politicians for perpetually putting at risk the people most vulnerable: Nursing home residents! If you want an idea of textbook privilege, that's it.

Again - Trump's a fool, so he damn well missed it. He could have exhorted literally millions of young, healthy workers into jobs that relieved the elderly from those roles, or even advocated a massive building program that retrofitted, with haste, nursing homes around the nation with better protection. That all went by the boards, of course. Now we're a bunch of assholes fighting over gyms and haircuts and Costco, as if that's where the biggest risks lie.

 

Is the Spanish Flu numbers taking into account the whole run (including the devastating second wave) or just the first wave?
