This whole thing is really dumb. Is a mask really that big deal? Kids have active shooter drills for “freedom.” Wearing a mask to help public health isn’t too much to ask.

But go on thinking this is a New York problem. Though New York has no power to stop flights from Europe. Which is how it got to New York. And it was made worse when Trump mangled the his Oval address and sent people scrambling home all at once from Europe.

Nah. Conflict and anger sells. That's why folks who are 100% for wearing masks, in every circumstance, focus not on the 85% wearing them but some lake bar in the Ozarks. They're not excited at the general, overwhelming compliance. They're mad at the outliers. (Whether or not they're really that mad, I dunno. Mostly, they know the idea of being mad gets likes and clicks and gets them booked on shows/money in their Venmo account/etc)

Speaking solely from an analytical point of view - I wear a mask everywhere - four things are working against the people dismayed that someone wouldn't wear a mask.

    1. We were explicitly told not to do it 2 1/2 months ago, and that it would be of little benefit to do so.

    2. We told to stay inside, for very a long time, with which, for the most part, people complied, especially when the death tolls appeared headed, according to models, for the millions.

    3. There's been genuine disagreement on whether the lockdowns should end, mass shaming ensued for that, and the non-mask-wearers are generally inured of it now.

    4. People don't trust much of anything, so that includes the guidelines saying to weak masks. Tut-tutting about it does no good, because, again, there's always someone getting hysterical about something that the masks - which I think reduce the spread of the virus - is just another thing.

If scientists had said, "OK to go outside in most places, OK to play on playgrounds, oceans OK, but wear masks everywhere - in other words, lots of freedom with a caveat - it'd look different, I think. It looks how it looks in part because it feels like a constant moving of goalpost, in which the goal of the parent is some minimum compliance of the child.

    Nope.

Is it really that hard to stay 10 feet away from the NYC asshole not wearing one?

How do you stay ten feet from invisible bits of virus floating in the air? Inquiring minds want to know.

You’ve clearly never been to a NYC grocery store. Yes, it’s impossible to stay 2 feet away, let alone 6 or 10.

Not being an asshole is the point.

That's great and all, but we still have to go to the grocery store.

You need to be around those invisible bits for an extended period of time to acquire the viral load needed to cause an infection. Passersby in a grocery store aisle do not give it to one another.

Why aren't there more stories about all the sober drivers?
