We did. From April 5 to June 19, things were pretty darn flat.

Most Phase 1 openings were at the beginning of May (Georgia's even earlier). From May 5 to around June 9 the curve starts LOWERING. So I do not see how a case can be made that opening Joe's Shoe Repair on May 1 was a bad idea. Joe's store allows only so many people in, enforces social distancing, and has employees wearing masks and standing behind plexiglass. His store is not the problem.

Cases are increasing not because Great Clips or Olive Garden opened in Phase 2, but because people (and selected places) are being stupid. Gathering in large crowds with zero social distancing.

Put another shelter-in-place order in, and 30 people can still attend a birthday party.

Was about to make the same point, BT. Like I said, when I was in Charleston last week, I watched Premier League outside at a hightop table away from everyone. But when I went inside to use the restroom, I was the only one wearing a mask and the bar was packed elbow to elbow with people watching the games. Ridiculous.

I have been to three restaurants. Closest customers were three booths away. At one we asked for outdoor seating but were told none was available (because every other table was mandated empty). Sad to say I do not remember looking at the bar area (I never sit there), so I have no idea how good or bad they were enforcing distancing.

With just a little effort, you can conduct reasonable business in this country safely.

As an aside, there are two convenience stores I regularly frequent. Close to the same size (maybe one is 10-15 percent larger). Both have signs limiting the number of customers. One store's limit is 10. The other's . . . 72.

I cannot imagine 72 people crammed into a QT.

Bar seating isn't available here yet, so that's not an option for people. I kind of dig the reservation system for patio seating, even if it's limited to just a couple of hours. Fuck, with all of the protesting and police crackdowns going on in my city, it's better for me to hit a couple of patios and be in by 8 or 9 anyway these days.

In the Long Beach area, everyone wears masks everywhere. Granted, I've been to a restaurant only once in the last 3 months.

Grocery store run yesterday, I counted two (2) people wearing masks in the Neighborhood Market besides myself. There were easily 100 people in the store. Even employees were not wearing them.

Bars are packed too. Friends at the local A-B distributor said they’ve delivered more beer to bars in the past two weeks than in the comparable timeframe last year.

An effort we seem unwilling to make.

Last weekend, my wife and I ventured out to a restaurant for the first time. We sat outside and had a few drinks. The hostess was wearing a mask, but none of the other staff I saw was. It was nice to just get out and feel normal for a bit, but I won't be doing that again anytime soon. Not worth it for me.

Everybody I know here in London expects a second spike this Fall.

For the next two months,, it's going to be a balance between keeping safe and taking advantage of this brief window.
