We are more civilized and less violent as a society than we have been at any point in human history.

Aurora? Portland? Gun-free zones? Here are some more. Not all "gun-free":

I guess it's possible that the mother was the victim of a random broad daylight home invasion the same day her son shot up a school...

And now Fox is reporting that Ryan Lanza's girlfriend and one of his friends are missing.

With regard to terrorism, I have always said we have it pretty good here in the US on a daily basis, because, unlike Israel, Iraq, Afghanistan and other locations, we don't have a segment of the society so desperate and with no hope that they resort to strapping explosives to themselves and then attacking a loaded bus of innocents, or a cafe, or a theater.

So, we don't have to live with a daily fear, emphasis on DAILY, of being attacked by an enemy from within our borders. Yes, we are still the target of terrorism, and our defensive efforts are needed to protect us from external threats. But for the most part, we don't fear attacks as we go about our everyday business.

That might be changing though. There is a segment of society in the US that is taking out large numbers of people. I would guess a rough criminal profile would indicate that dangerous segment to be males under 30 with mental problems of some sort.

And without easy access to explosives (no organized group of suppliers, fellow terrorists, etc.) or the added difficulty of building a bomb with the unknown of how many people you would take out with such devices, people are resorting to the easiest weapon that they can get their hands on - guns. All types of guns with a variety of ammo, clips and magazines. Semi-automatic and automatic. Long barrel, short barrel and handguns.

    I don't really see a solution.

How do you detect that someone is about to go over that edge and start murdering people? How do you do that, even for a single murder, let alone a mass murder situation?

I am just posing questions. I was very uncomfortable around here when the DC snipers were on the loose. I did have a daily fear when that was going on.

After today, I still don't have a daily fear, but unfortunately I am getting to the point where nothing really surprises me anymore, I am getting a bit numb to it, and yet I do wonder what I can do to protect myself and avoid being in the next situation. How?

And what role does all the supersaturation reporting of the media actually make this worse? I mean, the news has to get out. There is no stopping that. But there is a very real and unfortunate enabling effect behind how all the media saturation might lead to future attackers getting bad ideas and also having a body count goal to reach.

    What are we becoming?

No answers. Just questions. Sorry for the long post, but those are my thoughts as this evening darkens on what should have been another joyous day during the holiday season.

Jesus Christ, I don't think the CNN logo on your jacket is big enough Ashleigh.

I'm still waiting for any gun proponent to give me a good reason why assault weapons should be protected. This deranged subhuman would still have killed people if armed with a handgun, but the opportunity to keep firing and keep firing almost certainly elevated the carnage.

I'm pretty sure the nature of this particular crime will lead to much stricter regulations on assault weapons, which is why all the screaming about needing to talk about gun control RIGHT NOW is nothing more than attention whoring.

What stricter regulations have there been since Aurora? What has been proposed? For that matter, what has happened in that area since Columbine?

You're pretty sure of something happening that doesn't typically happen in these cases.

Well, they need 'em to shoot up the tanks and helicopters and soldiers when sent for their property.
