Yes, by all means let's demand the photos to satisfy our own emotional needs.

    Did I "demand" them?

I said if they were available, I'd be interested in seeing them. As a journalist. As a citizen. As a parent. As a human being. I think I tried to articulate all of those, in response to Ruckus's inquiries, which were well-worded and fair.

I say this with no rancor and no heatedness, but you need to hear it: The next productive post you make will be your first.

Your emotional experience. Your duty as a citizen. Your connection.

Why don't you call the parents directly? Demand the Dick Whitman Experience.

    It's a really interesting question.

If images like the ones under discussion aren't influential, why do governments censor combat photos in time of war on the assumption that they weaken civilian resolve?

I don't think so, either. This is not a case in which the two sides have different goals. They have the same goal: Reducing violence. They merely have different ideas about how to achieve this. It's not the same as, say, war, which some romanticized, at least in the pre-Vietnam days. People then NEEDED to see what the battle field was actually like.

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) today said we would have won Vietnam if we'd seen it through.

I think they should release the Sandy Hook shooting pictures right after they release the pictures of bin Laden's body, post-raid. I should think both have substantial editorial value, wouldn't you say?

Depends how you define the two sides. There may be individuals on the anti-gun control side who want to reduce violence, but the NRA? Their only goal is selling more guns.
