That's a pretty fine distinction. His Kent State photo, by the way, is an aftermath photo. As is the Oklahoma City photo. The post-rampage carnage is part of the unfolding news story.

"Most furthest left" accounts for a core of this board.

Okay, aftermath vs crime scene if you want to make that distinction. You will notice that the pics posted were also powerfull for what was being depicted, not the gruesomeness of them. I think that if the little boy was missing half his leg or the execured man had his fce blown off then the pics would have never been published.

They are more powerful for the story they tell than what you actually see. I don't see how pics of mutilated kids after an incident tell the same type of story.

It raises a question of decency in those who would dare use it....think of the parents.

Well that is one of the issues, one of the parents wanted an open casket so the damage could be seen. I don't think there is a one size fits all solution, just struggling to see why anyone would want to see the pics.

For me, the Kent State and Oklahoma City pictures are about the reactions of the living people in the photos. I have always had problems with the Viet Nam execution photo, but I think that one is at least, if not more, about the executioner than the victim. As Iron_chet said, they are telling the story of what you don't see.

    You are right.

I'm guessing if you looked at all the images on the roll when this was thought, there probably was more blood and guts to use. But these were the right mix of shock, timing and framing to make it memorable.

The Kent State photo was also staged.

I went to Kent...in fact, my dorm was about 1,500 feet to the right when you are looking at the picture. It was pretty common knowledge around Taylor Hall that Filo asked her to extend her arms. So I really don't have a link, but do have quite a bit of local information. We discussed this photo in one of our photojournalism classes at length. I can dig up my notes if you want :)

I do have a link to how it was altered...but this is not the photographer's fault.

One thing I do find amazing is how Filo had a picture of the dead boy in the photo, Jeff Miller, leading the protest and waving a black flag down the hill shortly before the shootings happened.

If you ever get the chance to visit the Kent State campus you have to check out the spot of the shootings. There is a steel sculpture in front of Taylor Hall, with steel about 4 inches thick, that has a clean bullet hole right through it. Also, a bullet hit one of the Tri-Tower dorms about a half-mile away. If you stand where the guardsmen were shooting, and look at Tri-Towers, it's pretty clear there was at least one guardsman not shooting to kill.

The Michiner book is pretty solid. Read it if you get the chance.

I saw it was altered, but that is a pretty big statement to say he posed her.
