Tell that to an 83-year-old woman who doesn't drive. Not to mention the circularity of trying to get a copy of a birth certificate, as is required in many places now. Difficult to do that without ... an ID. (Or money. Which is the point.)

Granted that discussion doesn't belong on this thread. However, I don't post on that thread, and I don't particularly appreciate my post being copied in there. (I nearly responded before I realized what had happened.)

I'd prefer if it were removed.

I have no problem telling that to such an individual. I would be surprised if the scenario you present is anywhere near the norm, though.

It took me a month to renew my driver's license because I had to send off to another state for the new Homeland Security-certified birth certificate. Money grab aside, I understand the thinking behind the new version, but I found it hilarious that A) my original birth certificate, issued and stamped and footprinted at the hospital on the very day of my birth, no longer is recognized or accepted as official proof of identification, and B) my replacement birth certificate says "Certified Original" at the top.

It took me a few weeks to get one back in 2002. Moved to a different state and never had a "real" birth certificate. Only had a hospital certificate.

Uncouple non-drivers' license IDs from the DMV and let counties issue state-approved IDs.

In fairness, the same holds true for buying a gun. If it is a pain in the rear to get an ID it effects everything you need an ID for...so that's not really a valid excuse. I see what you are saying, but don't buy the "inconvenience" angle. I agree you should show ID to buy a gun, regardless of how long it takes you to get it.
