We hope to have a list of finalists by the end of the week, and plan on starting interviews a week or two later.

Stef was a great hire for the U-T. Outstanding reporter. We'll miss her something crazy.

It's not like San Diego has that many rough-ass neighborhoods. There is housing to be found on the (relatively) cheap if you're willing to just accept $1,000/month won't get you the same thing there as it will in Nashville, or Cincy, or Denver, or wherever.

Lots of firefighters nationwide are paid six figures. That's one of the powerful unions out there. You have to put your years in, but that's good eatin. Literally. Some firehouses could be two-star Michelin.

I have a cousin who's a firefighter. Looks like a bodybuilder, and makes the best smothered pork chops you'll ever eat. He has time on his hands during the course of the workday.

    ***Update***

For those that have applied, we're still reviewing resumes and clips.
Please be patient and we'll try to contact you as soon as possible.

And sorry I haven't had a chance to respond to everyone individually. I'm also still in the process of moving out to San Diego.

The writers who takes these jobs should live in Tijuana and commute to save money... :D

I'm guessing they have contacted finalists by now.

I take delayed offense to this.

You can't compare what keeps newspapers going to a time when there was no organized sports. That's dumb. It's a different world now.

And I know this isn't going to fit into your world view, Mark, but if a newspaper manages to stay in the black these days, it's in large part due to the "toy department." So please don't diminish the job or the importance of it.

It's important because people deem it important. But we get it. On this thread, you're choosing to deem sports trivial.

Translation: "Hey, does anyone know if they've contacted finalists? I probably didn't get it..."

I only say it because been there, done that. That sort of self-loathing-hope-someone-else-knows-so-I-stop-hoping-and-move-on sort of feeling. I mean, Larry himself said yesterday he's still reviewing resumes.

I'm not sure about that. I would imagine they would have the high school position close to being done. High school sports start in three weeks or so. Also, I'm guessing they want to get the Chargers guy in quickly because training camp has already started and preseason games aren't too far off. In terms of the Padres, if you hired someone today, he would be around for the final six weeks of the season. Can't wait too long on that one.

I got to say that the Chargers/Multimedia reporter position sounds really interesting and the U T San Diego has done quite a lot of video in the past. I wish everyone who applied a lot of luck and well wishes.
