Multiple reporter openings, U-T San Diego

Discussion in 'Journalism Jobs' started by Larry Graham, Jul 13, 2012.

  1. We be on these?

  2. Just stumbled onto this. Apologize for my tardiness.

Speechless on the salaries. Yes, Graham gets a gold sticker for being upfront about the salaries -- to avoid the utter disbelief he would have seen in the faces of his candidates.

But $35K to $40K, in San Diego, is criminal. That's a salary for a reporter in Podunk, USA.

But we know that Graham's hands are tied. He's trying to make the best of it.

Yeah, the salaries are definitely not Graham's fault and I respect the hell out of him being upfront about it.

There are a couple papers that are notorious for trying to surprise applicants with a lowball offer because they're in cities that are considered very desirable and it's great that San Diego is being up front with the salary issues.

If you're young and want to prove yourself, I can't think of two better people to work for...

Podunk? You ever worked in Podunk? No one I knew in Podunk made anywhere close to $35K. Try $25K.

    $25K? Dang, they're lucky.

The cost of living calculator says $35k in San Diego is equal to $23,879 in Yuma. So yes, $35k in San Diego is pretty much in line with Podunk wages when you consider how cheap it is to live in Podunk.

All right, there can be no more knocking of Podunk. I know people in Podunk. They're good people. Hard-working people. People with dirt under their fingernails.

(Now, those commies in West Podunk, they can kiss ass.)

Add former AOL Fanhouse writer Tom Krasovic to the list. I hear he starts next week.

Good. GREAT guy. GREAT reporter. Worked with him at CBS and at FanHouse. He wasn't on the college football crew, yet he volunteered to pitch in during bowl season and was a huge help. Team player and all that. Larry/Todd and crew will love him

Krasovic's a damn good writer. Good to see him returning to the San Diego paper after he was "right-sized" a few years ago.

All right! If anyone knows the team fairly well it's Tom. I've either read him or Bill Center when it comes to Pads stories. Congratulations to Tom. :)

**UPDATE** I've filled most of the positions and was able to create a couple of new ones.
However, the Padres opening, which is a very blog-heavy position, is on hold until next year.
Below is the list of hires, which is also on the APSE website. But I wanted to thank everyone who applied.

    Growing in San Diego

The expansion at U-T San Diego continues with the addition of seven staffers:

    • Stefanie Loh as San Diego State football beat writer and enterprise writer. Loh, the president of AWSM, spent nearly three years at the Harrisburg (Pa.) Patriot News, where she handled sports enterprise and was part of the Penn State football coverage team. She placed fourth place last year in the APSE contest for explanatory reporting in the 75,000 to 175,000 category. She also worked for 2 ½ years at the Dominion Post in Morgantown, W.Va.

    • Matt Calkins as enterprise reporter/columnist. Calkins joins the UT after collecting three first-place APSE awards (columns, feature, beat writing) last year in the 30,000 to 75,000 category, while working for The Columbian in Vancouver, Wash. He began as a preps writer at the Press-Enterprise in Riverside, Calif., and was a columnist when he left there in 2010.

    • Michelle Gingras as multimedia sports reporter. A Loyola University New Orleans graduate, she will shoot, write and edit video segments as part of enhancements to the online product.

    • Dennis Lin as preps reporter. He has interned at the Santa Monica Daily Press and was a team writer for the Los Angeles Clippers. Most recently, he spent the last year covering high schools, the SEC and NASCAR at the Birmingham News.

    • Craig Malveaux as preps reporter. A Loyola University New Orleans graduate and Louisiana native, he was a sports intern at the Minneapolis Star Tribune and the Houston Chronicle, and interned on the crime desk at the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

    • Tom Krasovic as Chargers blogger and multimedia reporter. Most recently, he worked at AOL FanHouse and was a Chargers correspondent for CBSSports.com. He had previously spent 10 years at the UT covering a wide variety of beats.

    • Lisa Lane as multimedia sports reporter. A University of Arizona graduate, she will focus on on preps and will play a pivotal role in the launch of a preps TV show on Sept. 15.
