Heyward-Bey was one of the biggest WTF picks I can remember, especially with Crabtree on the board.

My most memorable WTF? moment recently came back in 2003 maybe when the Vikings or someone just didn't pick for some dumb reason. Not even sure what happened. They didn't get their pick in on time. Fell asleep in the war room? In the john taking a dump.

    Bizarre.

Everytime I see the Raiders, that dude has at least one drop.

Sam, we disagree on Newton's potential, but your last post was dead on correct. If the Panthers don't agree with my opinion (that is, I think Newton can be a solid to better-than-that starter in 3-4 years), they have no business picking the guy. Hell, enough of the picks teams are sure of bust out. Making a wishy-washy pick is flat out insane. Die with your boots on, Marty.

Just curious, and I am not going to say Newton is better than what people respond with, but if not Newton, than who do you take at #1?

Is anyone in this draft a rock-solid choice at #1?

    1) Patrick Peterson
    2) Marcell Dareus
    3) A.J. Green

Peterson is a safer pick, but Marty Hurney might be concerned, at some level, about using that pick on a CB. If that's the case, I disagree. Given how Champ Bailey turned out, I wonder how many GMs would gladly go back and burn a No. 1 on him. IMO, he's a no-brainer because of Chris Gamble's erratic performances and the likelihood of Richard Marshall not returning. Not to mention that a good man-to-man cornerback doesn't have the transition headaches of a lot of other positions. That could be critical if the lockout lingers for any reason given a franchise with some roster holes and a brand-new coach.

Dareus has some concerns, but the Panthers badly need a difference-making DT. Then again, not too many teams couldn't use another one even if they had one or two solid ones.

Green could end up filling a need if the reports of Ritalin Child cleaning out his places and cubbyholes throughout the stadium in Charlotte are correct. Brandon LaFell, David Gettis and Armanti Edwards are already in place, so this would make WR an extremely young position, but supposedly Green is worth the pick. Supposedly.

  7. But it sounds like Carolina isn't sold on Newton (apparently no one else is either given the lack of trade requests for No. 1) but they are going to pick him anyway?
It makes no sense to me.

If nothing else, draft Patrick Peterson and put him on the trading block. If no one wants Newton - including Carolina - draft someone another team want and see what deal can be worked out.
The Panthers need help all over - except RB - they can sign a QB. And they might be able to pick up other help by trade.

Peterson is by far the safest pick, but you don't draft a DB with the No. 1 pick. There's a reason why it hasn't happened, I'd have to look it up, but I don't think it's happened in the last 30 years.

    1. Cam Newton is NOT worth a first-round selection.
    2. The Panthers should draft Peterson and put him on the trading block.

    This just keeps getting better.

In addition to Sam's three, I would submit Von and Julio.

Thought I heard Parcells say that Peterson has "short" arms.

There are years where teams would do just about anything to get the No. 1 pick and then there's this year.

Newton has the most upside of any player in this draft.

Somebody wrote a few weeks back that the only murmurs about moving up were by teams who wanted to draft Dareus or Miller and they're not going to give up a huge amount to do so.

One of the blogs said that Houston might give the No. 11 pick and it's second-round pick to Arizona to move up to take Peterson and the story mentioned that Carolina might give up the No. 1 pick for the same price.

    I don't see that happening.
