I love Jimmie Dale. He and Joe are kinda 1A and 1B, with Hancock a ways back. I like Hancock more as a songwriter than as a performer, but you sometimes have to make some allowances with singer-songwriter types. Jimmie Dale has that high lonesome sound going. I kinda look at his style as something of a male version of Emmylou Harris, although his voice is much more nasal. People tend to like or dislike him, it seems like there's not a lot of middle ground.

I caught Dave Alvin & the Guilty men at a different City Stages show. We were down front, dancing in front of the stage to "Marie, Marie", my wife and I and three or four other people. There was a woman dancing close to us with a drink in her hand and we bumped. She spilled maybe a third of it, stops and stares at it on the ground, says "You sonofabitch, you spilled my drink!" and throws the rest of it in my face. I look at her, kinda shocked, and say "Yeah, and I would have bought you another one if you weren't such a bitch about it."

At that point, she punched me in the mouth.

So I'm looking at her, greatly astonished, not quite sure what to do. Obviously I can't hit her back, but I'm pissed off. My wife jumps between us, and the moment passes. She takes her drunk ass back over and sits with her friends, badmouthing me and grinning smugly. We just ignore her and go back to our seats. And that's my Dave Alvin story.

Show was great, but as stupid as it is that's the first thing that comes to mind when I hear "Dave Alvin" to this day.

Jimmie Dale and Iris Dement have a similar vocal style, kind of a stressed, nostalgic sound. Maybe a little Jimmie Rodgers influence? Very distinctive, at any rate.

I've been to a couple Dave Alvin shows, and I've been lucky in that nobody tried to punch me out!

I interviewed Mojo Nixon when he came to town with Skid Roper touring behind his Frenzy album. Easily the funniest guy I ever interviewed. I see him now he's so fat he looks like he ate Skid.

    This is fucking epic:

The CNN Originals productions that showcase American music and culture by the decades are amazing.

The rare mash-up video better than the song.

Wishbone Ash, “Blowin’ Free,” from their “Argus” album, 1972.

As someone who was born that year, the song and album are holding up a hell of a lot better than me!
