    Two "must get cd's" :

It won't be soon before long by Maroon 5 (great follow up to their first cd)
Release the Stars by Rufus Wainwright

I love Limewire! I'd help ... provided country and boy bands are banned ...

With the diversity of music here, I'd like to suggest to whomever steps up to organize this you try to group it by musical types. That way someone won't be trading with someone whose musical tastes are the exact opposite of his/her own. For instance I'm primarily a rock/alt.country (Americana) fan who doesn't like rap/hip-hop. So I shouldn't be trading with a huge rap/hip-hop fan who doesn't care for acoustic stuff, as I won't like his/her mix disc and he/she won't like mine.

I think just one-on-one trades or groups of no more than five and everyone within that group trades with everyone else.

Or if there are fewer than 12 people interested, then you could just make it a one-shot deal... everyone makes a copy for everyone else and gets them in the mail before the end of June. Or each month one person makes a copy for everyone in the group.

I think one person each month would work out well.

I agree with you to an extent, E. I don't want to listen to any rap or, as Flash mentione, boy bands. On the other hand, if it's too organized, then you're not going to get exposed to much that's new. And isn't that the point? If the person you're trading with has musical tastes too similar, than you might end up trading discs with songs you've already heard a million times. Just a thought.

I like the idea of having one person a month make a mixtape, then mail it out to everyone. Once you send it out, you won't get picked for (at the very least) a year. And even though some people might not be into rap, some people might not be into alt-country. I guess I kind of like the idea of forcing myself to try different kinds of music.

The main drawback I see is the cost, unless you want to limit it to the first 12 people who want to join. If 50 people sign up, that's an investment of a lot of money and time burding CDs then mailing them out. And you also have to be willing to disclose your addresses to people. But, for that investment, you'll get back a bunch of new music.

I'm not a fan of the "throw out the disc after two weeks rule" because, for the most part, if I like something by an artist on one of the discs I get, I'm going to buy more of that artist's music. Someone gave me a mix CD with some Wilco songs on it a couple years ago. As a result, I now own every Wilco album and two DVDs, plus three Uncle Tupelo albums. I think trading mixtapes is as old as time, and it's not as if we're mass marketing the stuff. If you feel guilty about the free music, go on iTunes and buy each one of the songs after the fact, I guess.

Agreed about limiting the number of people. I think 12 would be a good number. I also agree with pallister that its a good thing if people are able to introduce others to music they wouldn't normally try.

I do alterna-rock and metal ... mellowing out with Motown ... and I don't mind the time it takes to burn and mail out. I'm in ... always looking for new stuff for road trips.

Perfectly understand about wanting to be exposed to new types of music.

One reason I was suggesting narrow the groups down to 5-6 was to keep costs of postage down and to limit how many people an individual is being outed to. Unless you use a mailing address of SJ screen name, address (instead of giving your real name).

I also disagreed with the two weeks and throw it out unless you buy something rule, but on the last exchange I did the organizer did it to appease those that were complaining we're stealing money from the artists by giving the music away for free like that.
