A few people were talking about and I'm shocked nobody mentioned any of these top three double albums:

    1) Bruce Springsteen - "The River"
    2) The Beatles - "The Beatles" (aka The White Album)
    3. Pinky Floyd - "The Wall"

Look again, they were all there.

And by the way, which one's Pinky? :)

Most patriotic album for the States, delivered by an ex-pat Canadian? Cool.

    Two reasons to rejoice...
Golden Smog is coming out with a new album.
A Big Star tribute album is finally going to get released.
Both are supposed to be out later this month or in July.

    Sirs, Madames,

If two-fers count as doubles, Big Star's studio stuff is all in that format.

Folsom Prison/San Quintin is another amazing two-fer.

Exile, Sex Machine and Layla still rank as the most amazing doubles and I think they all came out within about 18 months of each other. London Calling's there too.

    YHS, etc

The Clash's Sandanista would have made a damn good double album. As a three-album set it was a bit of a mess.

I'll add the Allman Brothers At Fillmore East to this discussion of great double albums too.

  8. I always thought there was a lot of filler on "The River." (Sherry Darling?) and that it would have been a better single record.

    Mr Bastard,

    Agreed.

No double-love for Metal Machine Music. (I once used it in a column talking about what you could expect from Alexei Yashin after an arbitrator ruled that he still owed the Ottawa Senators a season and was not a free agent. The old Contractual Obligation Mail-In.)

Quadrophenia would be in there for me. All killer, no filler.

Mr. Friend O' beat me to it with Quadrophenia which I like a lot better than Tommy.

As for The River, it would have been an unreal single album, but I think it holds up pretty well as a double (the first album is stronger than the second one). I loved "Sherry Darling" which is better than stuff like "Crush On You" and "I'm A Rocker".

And "Be True", which was the B-side of the "Hungry Heart" single, is better than a lot of the songs that are on there.

My favorite double is Neil Young's "Live Rust." Incredible, especially on a rainy autumn night.

I'm listening to Ice Cube's new album right now. "Stop Snitchin" and "Why We Thugs" are excllent tracks. Sounds like mid-90s Cube to me, which is a good thing. I'm not sure rap stars (or any stars for that matter) should carry the anti-snitching banner. Oh well.

Three Passys out of five overall.

His new song Number 1 with Kanye West is legit.
