I'm listening to the new Gaslight Anthem album.

    Man, does it suck.

I came into this Gaslight Anthem album with lowered expectations after the past few, which seems to be working. I don't love it by any stretch of the imagination, but I enjoy it. A big part of the reason I'm okay with lowering my expectations is that I know most of these songs will sound much better when I see them live in a month. Whenever I've seen them live, they've turned at least a couple of the songs I'm meh about on an album into songs I really like.

Just read this and it pretty much sums up my feelings: http://grantland.com/hollywood-prospectus/gaslight-anthem-get-hurt-review/

Haven't heard the new one but I have been underwhelmed by their releases since The '59 Sound which is one of my fave albums released by anybody on the last 10 years.

Don't know if I agree with this line from the Grantland piece:

Fallon naturally hates being compared to Springsteen, with some justification.

Fallon didn't seemed to mind the comparison when he was taking lines from Springsteen songs and sprinkling them through The '59 Sound or when he would appear onstage with the Boss and the E Streeters or when Springsteen would appear onstage with him.

I keep buying Gaslight Anthem albums because there's still a place in my brain where a 16-year old Brian loves big dumb overly-sincere rock songs, but Get Hurt is not good. Not as bad as Ian Cohen makes it sound on Pitchfork ("Fallon might as well be emoting in front of a House of Blues version of Chuck E. Cheese’s animatronic band"), but not good.

I've generally grown tired of Hyden's almost reflexive embrace of all that is middle of the road (as if he's some champion of the middle brow in a world that thinks it's too cool), but he makes a lot of great points in this one.

I listen to The Hold Steady whenever I think about a new Gaslight Anthem album.

That Ryan Adams tour you're looking forward to this fall just became that much more attractive -- Butch Walker will be opening.

Can anybody decipher for me what kind of music this is? Because it sure as hell ain't country.

No. 1 on the Nashville charts.

Just saw that. Hoping like hell they add a date near me.

Also of note from that announcement -- Butch says his new record will be ready by those dates, which are in October.

So bummed the Cleveland date is in November.

You could be in luck. Butch tweeted that he hopes to be playing the November dates as well.
