I'm almost certain to get blasted for this, but playing around on Napster today, I ended up downloading some Guns N Roses, including November Rain. What a great, great song. I was getting chills during the final instrumental (starting with the Civil War-like drum part). There are very few perfect things in music that don't involve Beethoven, Chopin, Rossini and Tchaikovsky, but the ending of November Rain comes pretty damn close in my opinion.

Son Volt's new one isn't receiving the respect here it deserves, probably because no one can remember the name. But it's the finest work Farrar has turned in since Uncle Tupelo. Beautiful guitar work and quality songwriting. Didn't know he had it in him.

  3. "Okemah and the Melody of Riot" is a quality album, better than Jay's solo stuff, but it is nowhere near as good as the "real" SV albums, particularly "Trace" and "Straightaways."

I respectfully disagree. I gave "Trace" plenty of chances, but it didn't take the way, um, "Okemeh" has. I can't pry it out of the player of late.

P.S. His recent Bush-bashing might be a bias.

Haven't heard the whole American V album from Johnny Cash, but God's Gonna Cut You Down is a powerful, powerful track.
I got chills first time I heard it on XM. It's amazing how different Ruck Rubin and Cash are/were, but how perfect they are together.

Anxiously awaiting Tom Petty's "Highway Companion" release on Tuesday.

I've heard some really good reviews about it already.

Agreed on Rick Ross. Heard the song this morning as I was heading over to the office after an assignment. I'm waiting eagerly for Pharrell's new CD, as well.

  9. Black Crowes and the DBT at the local shed this weekend.

UPDATE -- Somebody called "Robert Randolph and the Family Band" are the second act on the bill -- DBT are opening the show, alas. Anybody know anything about them?

They're awesome. If you download music, look up "I Need More Love" or "Going In The Right Direction." While I don't have any of their CDs, adding them have been long overdue.

Just got my ticket for Tom Petty in Atlanta on Sept. 22. The Strokes are opening up for them.

I've heard good thing about The Strokes in concert so I'm eagerly anticipating the show.

    Highway Companion in 3 days!

  12. New releases getting constant listenings:

Satyricon--Now Diabolical [early contender for best disc of the year]
    Celtic Frost--Monotheist
    Melvins--Houdini Live 2005
Zao--The Fear Is What Keeps Us Here [produced by Steve Albini--nuff said?]
    John Zorn--Moonchild

Will be in Denver in a couple of days for the final date of the Slayer tour.  Simply one of the best shows I've seen in many years hence the trip to see it again.
