I've heard a couple of Black Mountain songs on XMU ... pretty good. Kind of Government Mule-ish, but less jam-bandy, if that's possible. Digging The Office, as well.

With all due respect,  RR&TFB will blow DBT away. And when the Crowes do Neil Young's "Alabama", complete with a fire-breathing reprise, you will know you are at a rock and roll show.

If you liked the Outlaws, you'll love DBT.

If you've listened in awe to Jimi Hendrix, you'll love Robert Randolph. He just does it sitting down.

  6. Short of The Who from 1974 getting in a time machine and appearing in 2006, there is no live band out there that will "blow away" the mighty, mighty Drive By MF'n Truckers.

Edit: And, I've seen Robert Randolph and he puts on one helluva show.

    Sirs, Madames,

Currently on an Eno jag -- My Life in the Bush of Ghosts with David Byrne (extended, remastered, still amazing all these years later) and ambient stuff like Apollo and Thursday afternoon. Mrs Miler and I watched John Doe in Georgia (JJLeigh and Mare Winningham), so I started playing X's Los Angeles/Wild Gift.

    YHS, etc

To make a statement that no live band out there will "blow away" DBT, it means you've never seen Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band live (especially in '78) or the Waco Brothers live.

  10. I have seen Bruce and co., and am a pretty big fan.
They are great live, and maybe seeing them at a small venue (like the Stone Pony? back in the day), I would put them at the top of my list.
But having seen DBTs in a smallish club on numerous occasions, for my money they are the best thing going today. The raw power emanating from that three-guitar assault is mighty impressive.

I've not seen the Wacos, but have heard quite a bit of their stuff. I used to be a big Bloodshot fan.
Anyway, I stand by my statement that no band out there will "blow away" the DBTs.
Are there some who can compete? Most definitely, probably even Bruce and the boys at their age.
But I can't fathom anyone "blowing away" the DBTs in 2006, in terms of a live performance.
    YMMV, of course.

seen 'em both, and have seen langford in his many incarnations probably more than you have.

i stand by my statement. there are number of bands on the same level as DBT, a few just as good. but nobody -- and i mean nobody -- is head-and-shoulders better, and nobody is blowing them away.

  12. Maybe EStreet Joe can back me up on this, but Marah live is a great, great show. ... They bring the same power as Bruce, and to see them in a small club is a great effing show. ... Now if they will only come back to the west side of the Mississippi.

One of the most disappointing moments of my life came two summers ago when I drove from Denver to Santa Fe to see Marah play a small club there. Long story short, I arrived to find a sign that said their van had broken down, and the deal was canceled. It was a sorry ride back home.
