  1. For the three of you that give a crap...here's my thoughts on the new Slayer disc [Christ Illusion]:

Best production value since Seasons In the Abyss. Once again they're putting actual spaces between the tracks instead of the nonstop assault of the first few Rubin produced discs. "Flesh Storm" gets the whole thing off to a brutal start. These guys are now in their 40s and rawk harder and faster than most bands half their age. It makes you realize just how badly Metallica and Megadeth have pussed out in the past 10-15 years. Only two weak cuts on here: "Catatonic" and "Black Serenade." "Flesh Storm," "Eyes of the Insane," and "Cult" are the strongest lyrically (especially Cult's take on the largest cult in the world). As far as I'm aware "Jihad" is the first song to deal with a first-person perspective of one of the 9/11 hijackers. Sure to stir up some controversy a la "Angel of Death." Overall, another great disc though it's likely to be their last (according to Kerry King who will soon be starting up another snake breeding business).

I think Satyricon's "Now Diabolical!" is a stronger album than this. But not by much.

    More dopeness:
This is all really laid back hip-hop stuff, perfect for a nice chill summer night like it is tonight in Cali...

Aceyalone - Moonlight Skies (prod. by RJD2)

Dope L.A. rapper w/ help from the wonderful RJD2 on the beats. This song is beautiful.

Devin the Dude - Doobie Ashtray

If you've never heard Devin, you must. He's so cool and calm, yet pretty clever. Perfect smoking music.

People Under the Stairs - Acid Rain Drops

Another beautiful one. I love the beat and the sample. The emcees are OK, but the beat is the winner here.

    Kanye West - Home

This is the best of the still-unreleased Kanye West songs. First time I heard John Legend, and a nice metaphorical rhyme. This one was the second Kanye song I heard, so it's pretty old, but still dope.

    Electric Company - Respect Life

This track is so smooth. Love the horns, on some Pete & CL Smooth type of shit.

    Dr. Oop - Afro Joint

This is kinda clunky sounding, but catchy as hell. Again, more really chill shit, that if you smoke, blaze to this....

I ain't wading through 28 pages of thread to find out, so apologies if this is a D_B, but I'd encourage ya'll to pick up the new Golden Smog album.
A glorious mash-up of Jayhawks and Wilco that I can't seem to take out of my car's cd player.
The Big Star tribute album is also excellent, and it makes me a little sad. I wish that the Whiskeytown was still together.
And I have nothing to offer on the rap conversation.

  8. For my money, with Golden Smog, the whole has never equaled the sum of its parts.
That is to say, I should like them better than I do.
I hear their live shows are tremendous, though.

What's the name of the album? Is it better than Down by the Old Mainstream? Much different?

I, too, have nothing to offer on the rap conversation.

    Carry on.

  10. The new Golden Smog is called "Another Fine Day."

I haven't heard the whole thing, so I can't say it's better than "Old Mainstream," which I like a lot better than "Weird Tales."

I think it is their best album and by a large margin.
I have a special fondness for Weird Tales though. It was the album I was listening too when I almost died. It still skips at the spot where the drunk driver hit my car.

Anyway, more like the Jayhawks. If you like them, you'll like it. Tweedy doesn't do as much singing, but his guitar work shines. And I like Gary Louris's vocal work. But I also really like the Jayhawks, so I'm a little biased.
Some people have said not enough Tweedy for them, but I didn't mind it. Sometimes I think Tweedy and Jay Farrar are in race to see who can be the weirdest.
