Tweedy, I believe, is lapping him. BTW, any news on Wilco? They had that live album last year, but it was mostly a compilation. Because of Tweedy's weirdness (combined with the band's incredible musicianship), I'm interested in what they do next.

Having said that, my musical tastes lean more toward Farrar.

  2. Wilco has been playing 4-5 new tracks lately.
Should have a new album early in '07.

I'm not as interested in Farrar as I used to be.
The last Son Volt (One Volt) album was just OK, but better than his solo stuff.
The first two SV albums are 5-star classics, in my book.

If I had one CD to listen to on a deserted island indefinitely, it would be "Trace."

  4. It is absolutely on my short list.

I dunno, but the Wilco show I saw in April was one of the best concerts of my life. I'm definitely interested in what's next ...

Tweedy is a little too weird for me -- must be the reason I like Son Volt and don't like Wilco.
I've tried listening to some tracks off every Wilco album since Summerteeth and can't get into them.
The only tracks by Wilco I like are their contributions to the Mermaid Ave. Vol.1 and 2 compilations and an acoustic take of Box Full of Letters that appeared on a KGSR Broadcasts compilation years ago.

  10. Went down to the local shed last week to see Willie Nelson and JC Fogerty play. Willie's Willie, been giving roughly the same show since Appomattox. But Fogerty's got himself a serious kick-ass band and he's in high shape -- he even pulled "It Came Out Of The Sky," my favorite obscuro-Creedence number, out of the bag, along with most of the classics. He and Willie sang "Jambalaya" together. See this if you get a chance.

    Jackie,

Those are precisely my thoughts on the Smog. I love Wilco, love the Jayhawks, loved the old Soul Asylum, but I'm only lukewarm on GS. Weird Tales was solid, and the new album is OK, but this is a band that I theoretically should be completely into. And I'm not.

As for the Tweedy-Farrar debate, I'm more of a Tweedy guy, although Farrar put out the greatest single record since the Uncle Tupelo break-up. I'd rank the best of the post-UT stuff as follows:

    1. Son Volt -- Trace
    2. Wilco -- Being There
    3. Wilco -- Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
    4. Wilco -- Summerteeth

Tweedy vs. Farrar is sort of a Ginger vs. Mary Ann/Wilma vs. Betty thing, except no chicks involved and less gingham. I'm personally a Tweedy guy, but agree that lots of recent Wilco, for me anyway, has been hit or miss. Some songs just feel like "album filler" that are too weird arragnement/instrument-wise for their own good, as if he's just coinsciously trying to sound unusual.
