Beck's new album is really good. It's def. Beck and all. If you liked Guero, you'll like this one.

Also, the new Scissor Sisters album is a lot of fun. An iPod staple for months to come.

    Before you ask: I'm straight.

  2. Mastodon's "Blood Mountain" is absolutely EPIIIIIIIIIIIIIIC!

Saw them a couple of nights back (third time this year!) and they were as amazing as ever. They're on the road now with The Bronx as openers. Anybody living in Europe will be able to catch them opening for Tool in a couple of months.

Anybody get the Killers new record?

I'm downloading it, but the reviews are interesting. Some people hate it because it isn't the exact same shit as Hot Fuss. Then again, I can't stand it when a band makes an outstanding record and comes out with the same sound on the second album. Clearly, that's pissing a lot of Killers fans off.

Another band that I never thought in a million years that I'd like is Angels & Airwaves ... I keep hearing songs from that record on XM and I like every freaking one of them, especially "Distraction."

Passy, I bought the first Scissor Sisters album off iTunes. I'll check out the second one. I like the vibe of the first. Much more piano-y than guitar-y.

  5. Just to listen to something different in the car today, I picked up my cassette copy of Joni Mitchell's Court and Spark. Not a huge fan -- the cutesy, giggly early stuff makes my ears itch -- but this is a terrific record.

Well, having given "Sam's Town" an initial spin, I think people who are complaining are complaining just to complain. This is a pretty excellent record. Definitely different from "Hot Fuss" but not bad different.

Rolling Stone complained, that's for sure: It gave "Sam's Town" two stars. It's somewhere in the middle -- around three -- I think. Some songs, like "When You Were Young" and "Bling," are gems. Others are waaayy overdone.

It's not great. It's not the abomination some are making out to be, either. For whatever reason, those people -- which likely represent the majority of fans -- don't want to see an artist grow. They'll take the re-heated version of "Mr. Brightside" everytime.

Eh, I just read that review ... can't say I agree that much. I don't think it's as "pompous" as Sheffield makes it out to be.

Then again, this is a magazine who thinks the Libertines is the greatest fucking rock band ever and acts if Pete Doherty is the second-coming of Jim Morrison or something. Tastes, tastes.

Fuck the Libertines. Third generation Clash wanna-bes. Fuck Pete Doherty too. Dumb junkie fuck-up. Hooked up with a supermodel, got a kid, but he would rather shoot dope and squirt his blood on the walls. If he's still alive a year from now, the laws of probablility ain't working.

Oh, and I might add that Rolling Stone is the magazine that thinks Fall Out Boy saved rock and roll. ::)

And in the same issue as the trashing of "Sam's Town" they had a Fergie review that talked about what a great song "London Bridge" is.

The RS reviews tend to be a lot of hipster posturing for the magazine and very little in the way of actual music criticism.

Then there's Entertainment Weekly, who compared the Killers to Bon Jovi.
