I disregarded the previous mention on here because I had never heard of them, but I just listened to the Black Keys for the first time, and they kick ass. I'll be snapping up a couple of their records ASAP.

I've been a Rolling Stone subscriber for almost 30 years and its review section has almost no credibility now. Jerking off long-time faves (4 1/2 stars or whatever it was for the Stones' good, but not great Bigger Bang) or running two-star reviews of no-name acts (no album garnering less than three stars should ever be reviewed unless it's by a major artist), it's basically just a waste of time now.

AllMusic.com is the place to go for solid reviews these days IMO.

The best was the FIVE star review of Mick Jagger's last solo record.
I got that mag for 13 years and the quality had slipped way off by the end. I started getting it again a few months ago and for every decent article, they've got three clunkers. Why the hell would anyone want to read something about Nick Lachey's life as a single man?

Thanks for the link to Allmusic, huggy. Hadn't been there before. Lots of good stuff there.

I still get RS because it's dirt cheap and every once in a while, there's a very good story in there. But you guys are right about the "jerking off favorites" stuff. They have certain people they love ... like Fall Out Boy. Seriously. When did Pete Wentz become the spokesman for rock and roll? Their stuff is OK, but RS makes FOB out to be one of this era's most influential bands. I just don't get that infatuation ...

I agree. Stephen Thomas Erlewine is one of the best music critics around.

  9. An old fellow Who fan passed along the live CD from the Isle of Wight in 1969. It apparently came out sevceral years ago and I missed it completely.
    Oh, my living god.
All the hits -- including the lost Entwistle masterpiece "Heaven and Hell," and a full performance of Tommy, introduced by Keith Moon, who says, "Assemble the musicians!" to start it off. "We're Not Going To Take It," especially the "Listening to you..." ending, is a freight train.
For about five years -- 1969-1974 -- they were the best that ever was.

i'm relatively new to the band, but the first thing i noticed is how fast they play live. most bands turn it up a notch or two, they turn it up about 10x that.

Got a copy of the new Jonny Lang CD "Turn Around" at work a few days ago and it's a pretty good album.
Nothing earth-shattering, but it's a nice mix of blues, funk and gospel. Some real standout tracks on there.
