Another unpopular opinion of mine: I think Nas is overrated. Terribly overrated.

I can name three guys off the top of my head I like better, all mentioned previously: Mos, Talib and Jay-Z.

I understand you like those three better, but I'd have to hope you were kidding if you said they came close to Nasir Jones' poetic talent. He makes Black Star sound like a joke — and Mos and Talib really are talented.

whoa - i dont think he's so far and away that Black Star sounds like a 'joke' - far as i know those two haven't dropped classic dumps like the Firm or Nostradamus. as far as him being overrated - that's where i think the feeling comes from - he did fall off for a minute before the battle with JayZ.
and Pastor - that has nothing to do with album titles, or song titles for that matter

I will accept that Jay-Z might not match your ideal of 'lyrical skills,' but he earns much credit from me for having good flow and NEVER writing his lyrics down. There aren't any jotted down notes, no nothing. Jay just goes.

As for Mos and Talib, I'd take them in a heartbeat over Nas. Easily.

If you're being honest, I hope you don't gamble. It sounds like you've never listened to Illmatic, I Am... or It Was Written. Stillmatic and God's Son weren't the best albums, and Street's Disciple was pretty solid, but you really can't touch Nas during the 1990s. Hip Hop is Dead reminds me more of those albums, which is why I have no problem defending him as the best rapper alive.

I didn't this as a Jay-Z/Nas thing, either. Hov got killed on "Ether," but I still listen to both rappers. It doesn't make sense to me how you can say Jay has a good flow, like Nas doesn't? The dude spits perfect on every track.

You'd be much better off not making crass assumptions. I owned Illmatic. I heard both I Am... and It Was Written.

    I. Don't. Like. Nas. I don't like his flow, and I think he's overrated.

Preaching to me doesn't work for you.

this is one of those endless debates.
i dont like Jay, and i dont like his flow. therefore, i think he's overrated. and the whole part of not writing anything down...he's not the only one who does it that way, but that doesn't mean what he does is any better than anyone else. in fact sometimes that hurts him, I think.
we're not even taking into account people like Rakim, some members of the Wu-Tang Clan, I'd even go so far as to say even a Jadakiss, and Rhymefest, Lupe Fiasco etcetc

its like the 'greatest QB' debate - fun to get into, impossible to get out of

Precisely. I won't debate Jay because some like, some don't. I was just asking CradleRobber not to denigrate me because we have different tastes. Never did I say Nas fans were morons, or that he sucks...but that I didn't like him. BIG difference from what CradleRobber was saying.

I haven't heard enough of Rhymefest to make a call on that, but I have been playing the hell out of "Food and Liquor" in my car. It's what's in my CD player right now.

i definitely recommend Rhymefest's debut. Food & Liquor is fantastic. "Hurt Me Soul" is the first record to give me chills every time i hear it since, well, a few tracks by Pac.

Downloaded a bunch more Reckless Kelly today, and damn, the shit is good. And I don't like country. Also downloaded the Easy Star All-Stars reggae tribute to Radiohead's "OK Computer." Fucking brilliant.
