Terrific issue of Sports Illustrated this week with several quality features and vignettes (Where Are They Now). The story on Russell Martin was well-crafted, and I enjoyed Reilly's column on the transsexual sportswriter.

SI did a very good job on its most recent Where Are They Now so I'm eager to read this one. Soon as nature calls, I'll get started.

Our favorite ABA owner, Alex Wolff, wrote a few of the WATN? pieces, including one on Mario Mendoza of "The Mendoza Line." The first, umm, line is great, and he tied it together with the last line. Good stuff, Alex, and yo, can the Frost Heaves repeat?

Mendoza, Boomer Esiason (sp?) and Hanson brothers were all great stories, I thought.

Just read it. Lots of wine types out there.

Loved the Where Are They Now. It's one of the best things SI does. As a huge Hill Street Blues fan, I appreciated the Ed Marinaro update.

I liked the Mendoza story the best - always wondered who coined the expression - and what a stand-up guy to go through with the interview on the day he got canned. I've got a lot of respect for the man.

One of my favorites, when I had time to read it, was National Geographic. But it was so expensive to subscribe to, and often, it was hard to get through all of it by the time the next came. Of course, there would be times when the subjects weren't of interest, and with a magazine that costly, I'd feel bad skipping over them.

I subscribe, because they virtually GIVE the thing away . . . but Sweetcheeks Jann is such a shill for any modern act, and the political screeds are so predictable, it's increasingly-difficult to see the point.

I have not looked through the entire thread, but hopefully someone has mentioned Popular Science and Consumer Reports.
