The Week mentioned early, but not often enough.

Texas Monthly deserves both its accolades and its criticism. A member of their art staff speaks every semester to my class, and I love hearing about how they handle the art side of the mag.

I had a professor who worked for Texas Monthly, though I can't quite remember in what capacity. He was one of the best professors I ever had.

Brill's Content started strong then began losing steam and became tech-heavy with gadget reviews. They should have merged with GEORGE (another mag that went by the wayside). Sounds like another thread (best extinct magazines). I've had a hell of a time keeping up with ESPN since it replaced the rest of my FHM subscription.

Now that I'm 46 and going through several physical changes and working hard to live a healthier lifestyle, I find I'm getting more and more out of Men's Health as well as Muscle and Fitness.
Some of the stuff is way over the top and of no use for me, but some of it is very helpful when you can apply it to your own individual circumstances.

Mr. Horton, you might check out AARP Quarterly as well.

    ;-)

Pretty good cover story on Matt Damon in GQ.

Agree on The Economist being great for world news. If any of you want to read any professional history, (which I'm sure you don't), the American Historical Review and The Journal of American History are quality. And The William and Mary Quarterly is good for specifically early American pieces...

I read a story in The Economist last fall, which made me want to raise money to save the overworked, badly housed donkeys of Marden. That's still one of my life goals.

Boots, there is a story on page 88 of the current Details that I think you'd like.

And the accompanying photo they run on page 89? Holy crap. I don't know what else to say.

Also, Mental Floss is a pretty cool read.

    So is Baseball America.

Chris Raab wrote a strong piece on Sean Penn in the new Esquire. The opening graph made me think, "OK, while are you starting with this?" But then it gets good, and some of Chris' graphs are tight nuts of goodness. Enjoyable profile with a cool Joycean interview thrown in for added flavor.

Edit: jgmacg's "regrettable" line has been in my head all day, and that word is in this article. So I'm sure I'll start seeing it pop up everywhere in the next few days.

For mags that aren't "must-have" check out www.magazinedeathpool.com for the mags that are circling the drain.
