And yet somehow we carry on.

  2. I've noticed, too, that some smaller papers are like abusive husbands - they tell you you're fat and ugly so you won't stray. I worked at one for an internship. Before I left, the m.e. told me I wasn't good enough to move on to anywhere but, hey, he would do me a favor and let me work there after I graduated.

    Fuckwad.

God needs to work smarter, not harder.

Well, that time, I was at a large paper, and I had no problem leaving or finding other work.

At the smallest paper I worked, the publisher threatened my job on more than one occasion, and it became a very volatile environment: The managing editor and publisher stopped talking to me unless it was a necessity and didn't listen to one idea I had -- kind of like living at my parents' house after college graduation.

I never got in a yelling match with either of them, but I wanted to jump across a desk or two every once in a while. Those two walked around like they were God's gift to journalism. They were great to the employees until those young people stopped being so clueless and began to show integrity and their handle on proper ethics. Then they turned on them. Once they couldn't mold them into clones, they lost interest.

  8. I've been a little testy on deadline, but usually it's when the person is still fiddling with the last story 20 seconds before deadline and I've said just close it, we'll fix it for next edition. But flat-out screaming is just unprofessional.

I had a boss who I saw flat-out lost it a couple times, and it wasn't pretty and definitely counterproductive, but at least he had the integrity to eventually apologize to the person he was yelling at and/or the witnesses to the blowup. Perhaps that's the difference of yelling when you are stressed out as opposed to yelling because you are in charge and feel entitled to.

that should be the difference between keeping your job and getting fired.

If the boss can't keep it in check, how can he or she expect the staff to keep it in check?

I have to say, I'm sorry to see NightOwl go.

He/she had made some good contributions to this board, IMHO, and obviously had been seeking a sympathetic ear when this thread was started.

NigtOwl needed to hold back a little and post a bit more carefully, and hopefully, learn something from the situation in question. But still, I'm guessing he/she expected that they were writing about something to which we all might have been able to relate.

I hope NightOwl will come back, and come back a bit wiser for his or her bad night/experience, although I suppose we may not know if that ever happens.
