    From today's Times-Dispatch.

"Ruthanne Doherty is the second consecutive L.C. Bird player to be named Times-Dispatch player of the year, leading a young team of spunky personalities to the most successful season in school history.

Doherty (pronounced Doe-wat-tee) is a 5-10 forward who can rebound like a center and shoot like a guard. She averaged 18.5 points per game this season as her team advanced to the state semifinals."

No one is at fault at the paper, but if you do not like "Doherty" then have your name changed to spell "Doughwatty."

Nothing ticks me off more than people asking you to ignore everting you have learned about proper pronunciation, just so they can hear their name the way they want it to be heard.

  2. Since she's the player of the year, I'm guessing they've written about her a lot.

Do they do the "Doe-wat-tee" every time?

Wait a second. You're saying this girl and her family don't have the right to have their name pronounced the way they prefer?

If they tell you "Doherty" is pronounced doo-WOP-dee-dah, that's the way it is.

That's really weird. I would have assumed an accent on the "-fucking-"

    All of you are serious?

You are for the 97 different spellings of Sean, even though they are not even close phonetically?

    Chone? Sian?

There is a Shithead where I live, but the mother wanted it pronounced Sheethade. No problem with the second spelling, but come on.

I am not making that up, either. Mom couldn't read.

I am all for a name if it is in the ballpark phonetically.

    Sean and Shawn
    Stephen and Steven
    Kerry and Carrie
    John and Jon

They all make some sense to me. I have no problem with it.

People can pronounce their name any way they want, but it does not mean I have to say it that way the first time I read it.

Why make your child go through that their entire life?

Hell, just name the boy Sue.

Obviously, I am in the minority on this.

As someone who has an unusual last name, I don't mind correcting it if you say it wrong, but how dare you tell me how to pronounce my own name?

That's the effect you're giving off.
