Oh, he does more than that to undermine his own points. And at least when we see his name, we know what's coming.

This puppy veered way, way off course. Too bad. Anyway…

For people sincerely talking and thinking on this subject, I suggest reading a recent short story by Joyce Carol Oates - "The Girl With the Blackened Eye." It can be found in her collection "I Am No One That You Know." The story is, of course, heart-stopping, and actually provides a pretty good argument against my thesis. Or maybe not. Read it.

Here is a link to the whole story. Tough read, but worth it.

I'd argue that "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been" another of her short stories, and maybe her best known, is the flip side of the coin.

Is "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?" the one about the young girl and stalker? Arnold Friend or something like that?

I'm new here and figured I'd weigh in. I wish I could've gotten to this topic before it veered off track, because now I get the sense that there are only about five people still reading the thread and it's simply so they can argue with each other, but I'll still put in my two cents on the original topic and some of the responses I've read.

    (A) like many others, I did NOT feel Hill "brought the funk". it didn't do much for me and I'm not impressed with her constant need to insert herself in all her columns.

    (B) I noticed what I thought was an interesting inconsistency -- Hnida is charging rape based simply on her word, with no actual evidence whatsoever. but within the article, we also read this passage (bold added by me): "Immediately after Hnida went public, we heard the same things we always hear in these situations: unsubstantiated, salacious stories about the accuser. There were rumors Hnida removed her top at the team hotel during a bowl trip and gave her teammates lap dances. She denies it. None of it was ever proved, but that wasn't the point."

so what is the philosophical difference between her charge and those against her? neither is supported by any hint of factual evidence or proof that I'm aware of, yet Hnida's accusations are generally accepted as true at face value and the other charges are immediately dismissed as false. we've seen in the Duke Lacrosse case that false rape charges do occur, yet somehow that angle is never touched. I personally believe Hnida was assaulted (because why would you make that up?), but I thought I'd point out some underlying hypocrisy.

    (C) the world of sports is based on plenty of teasing, insulting and criticism. it's part of the culture. whether male or female, you need a thick skin and some mental toughness. she had to know that going in. her charges of "I was harassed" because guys gave her shit don't resonate too much with me.
