Next time you're driving way out of town on assignment, double the mileage and say you got way lost. They can't fire you for being an idiot or your corporate taskmasters wouldn't be employed.

    cheers

Thank you, buckw. I was about to post that same thing myself.

There is only one holiday -- Xmas. Thus, you get pay for only one holiday.

Didn't think about that. It makes perfect sense now.

Being an idiot is not only expected of management, it's a prerequisite.

This doesn't specifically relate to holiday pay, but it's kind of along the same vein: Coworker of mine once asked for a personal day off to go to the doctor or something, well, personal. She was told it would be unpaid, though it was time she was entitled to under the company benefits plan. Instead of fighting that, for the next year, she made sure she took care of personal business while at work, and spent far beyond a day's worth of time doing it. Now, I'm not advocating stealing time, but employers should really be aware that if they jerk their employees around this way, they will pay for it in other ways. (BTW, this underscores the farce of paying reporters by the hour, but that's another thread).

As for you, melock, sorry, but your expectation of two days of holiday pay isn't realistic, and and if your company is large enough to have HR professionals administering the benefits, I guarantee you that rule was in writing somewhere (employee handbook, perhaps?) long before Dec. 22. Before you make decisions to work unusual hours this way, do yourself a favor and find out what the rules are without waiting for an announcement.

    1. N_W is right on finding out the rules beforehand.

    2. I don't know of anyone who doesn't do something personal at the office at some point. Now, is it on the clock? Oftentimes, I'll use about 15 or 20 minutes way before deadline to pay bills or crank out a freelance story, but I'll also stay 15 or 20 minutes unclocked at the end of my shift to even it out. For all we know, she could've been doing that.
