I note without surprise that Ms. Patrick has her own headline/topic set-aside on the left front rail at CNN.

    DANICA PATRICK AT DAYTONA 500

    Starting grid, odds, predictions
    Opinion: A win for women
Opinion: Danica has plenty to prove
    Photos: Female firsts in sports

The Daytona 500 is one of the series' crown jewels and is a legit win. I know plate-racing is 70 percent luck and 30 percent skill (see Dale Earnhardt Sr., who was the best plate racer ever and it took him almost two decades to finally win one), but a win here still can make a career.

If Danica can win from the pole position, I know the anti-Danica crowd will crow about how fluky the plate races are and that'll hold some water. But a win in NASCAR's signature event still counts for something in my book.

If I had to have a favorite, it would have to be Kevin Harvick or Kyle Busch. Both are dominant and have the right amount of aggression and skill to ride the draft to victory lane. And as evidenced by yesterday, both have excellent cars.

Just a quibble on one detail ... Daytona didn't become a plate race until 1988 (that was my first and only Daytona 500 that I covered/attended), so Earnhardt the elder chased a plate win at Daytona for only a decade (he one his first and only in 1998).

Why don't you try reading what he wrote again.

He said NASCAR FANS will tell you F1 is easy. They're proud to tell you the only real racin' is NASCAR racin'. He wasn't taking the opinion from his own leanings, but from those of NASCAR fans. They don't care what Dario Franchitti did in Indy ... he was a failure in NASCAR, so he ain't a real racer. Foyt became a real racer when he won the 500, according to the myopic view of those in NASCAR Nation.
