OK, I looked up the numbers from the past four seasons now, including 32 postseason teams.

Only 12 of 32 (38 pct) had better than league average OPS out of the leadoff spot.
20 of 32 (63 pct) were better in the No. 3 spot.
22 of 32 (69 pct) were better in the No. 4 spot.

Admittedly it's not a perfect measurement, but I think that tells you that it's more important to have good middle-of-the-order hitters than a good leadoff hitter.

As for Jeter vs. Rollins, I don't think it's a significant difference between a leadoff hitter and a No. 2 hitter. They are both asked to do a lot of the same things. And Jeter got a lot of the credit for his defense, leadership, etc., just like Rollins.

If you don't think there is a significant difference between a No. 2 hitter and a leadoff hitter, I suggest you stop posting on baseball threads. You have just proven your stupidity beyond any doubt.

  3. If you don't think there's a significant difference between a leadoff hitter in the National League and a No. 2 hitter in the American League, then you don't know baseball.

    EDIT: Damn you, spnited!

Maybe that's what Brigitte Nielsen was trying to tell Flavor Flav the whole time.
