I really wanted Pearl Washington to shine in the NBA.

i covered pearl when he was a soph in high school. like a man among boys then. but he was too dominant. never had to develop an outside shot. :( :( :(

Pretty much a sure thing that Dukies will fail in the NBA.

I remember growing up in the LBC, turning on CBS every Sunday to watch those Big East battles with 'Cuse, G'town, St. Johns. I always wished USC could play like them, but instead they'd draft players like Larry Friend and Wayne Carlander; not bad, but you know ... One year ('88 or '89) USC went to the Carrier Dome early in the season (I think Pearl was still in orange) and Syracuse won by 35 or so.

There you go Xan. That's two lines. It took Melville six years to write the first two lines of Moby Dick. The night of the USC-NC game your subconscious might come with two chapters.

Roy Williams is going to use Tim Floyd as a tushy loofa.

"Al, did you get my tushy loofa?"

    "Uhh, no Peg."

Injury was main factor but all in all Grant Hill has been spotty.

Mark Alarie, Danny Ferry , G-man, Bobby Hurley, Christian Laetner, Jason Williams, Gene Banks, Jim Spanarkle - just to name a few Dukie failures.

    SEC: 3 (No. 1, 5 and 6 seeds)
    Pac-10: 3 (No. 2, 3, and 5 seeds)
Big East: 2 (No. 2 and 3 seeds)
    Big 12: 2 (No. 1 and 3 seeds)
    Big 10: 1 (No. 1)
    ACC: 1 (No. 1)
    Butler (No. 5)
    UNLV (No. 7)
    SIU (No. 4)
    Memphis (No. 2)

The performances of Vandy and Tenn. almost make up for the fact that Arkansas was pure sahit and had no right being in the tourney. Still, the top of the SEC -- other than Fla. -- is better than I thought (God, it hurt to type that!)

    All 4 No. 1s, 3 No. 2s and 3 No. 3s -- 10 of top 12 seeds -- still alive.

And Harold Miner was one of the most overrated players in the history of basketball.
