ARE WE REALLY GOING BACK TO THIS HERE! DO I REALLY HAVE TO TYPE IN CAPS!

We already had a thread about paying athletes. We could discuss this all day. This thread is for Cam Newton. Not if we should pay football players and women's volleyball players or what we think they should get paid.

I just feel like we have been through this argument for 9 pages. It's going to continue until our heads explode. Someone will mention that paying players is the only way out of this mess, nothing specific about Newton. Someone will join the party and say "They should get paid this much." This will go on forever. Its worse than the Steelers threadjack.

I don't care if player get paid over or under the table. My point is, why should Cam Newton be penalized in any way for profiting from a for-profit business? That's pretty specifically about Cam Newton. Besides, how can you discuss if anyone should be penalized for violating a rule without discussing said rule?

How can he be penalized if he broke a rule? Because he broke the rule. The rule itself may be dumb, wrong, unethical in itself, but if the rule is - you can't play for pay- then don't break the rule.

I don't think there is any argument from anyone on here that the rule doesn't suck. But the rule is the rule and until they switch it, players must abide by it.

Just a matter of time before someone "reports" that Cam Newton used to stay up past his bedtime without his parents knowing when he was 8.

    Stay tuned....

For one thing, the fact that a specific dollar amount (the $200K) is part of the accusation against Newton helps show the value of a star college athlete. The same with Reggie Bush and the house his family was given.

It shows that a star athlete's value is way above what the NCAA and the schools say that it is (the scholarships). Discussing whether college athletes should get paid on this thread is relevant to the Newton case, because, whether or not the accusation or dollar amount is true, we're talking about a Heisman Trophy candidate's value.

Like I said, the schools don't have to give anything above the scholarship. But that shouldn't mean that the athletes shouldn't be able to seek out their own revenue streams on their own.

If Mark Ingram can get commercial endorsements for being the Heisman winner, he should be able to do so. If the gymnast or the offensive tackle can't, well, at least they'll still have the scholarship.

That's how you get around Title IX. Let the boosters pay for the stars.

I'd argue that if we are talking about true market value, not what an agent could pay. Newton would be worth a lot more than $200k. I think a couple million. But now we are getting down a slippery slope. Because if you pay him a couple million, he should probably be in the weight room right now and not in class.

I have it on good authority from an unnamed source that he drank expired milk when he was 11. And now he leave the bracket of the close-quote tag on message boards ... He's the f-ing antichrist!
