My theory is that they did not toss Newton under bus until they realized he was going to start at QB. If he was back up it would have been non event.

    Again, NCAA, the buck-naked emperor.

    What a shock.

What exactly has "the NCAA" done wrong in this situation?

Since schools can't be expected to police themselves, the NCAA needs to have the resources to step in, and do an investigation of the claims against Newton quickly. If they can't, it's another example at how worthless the NCAA is.

The schools run the NCAA, not the other way around.

They're getting all the enforcement they want.

    My point:

They're going to ask Auburn to bench the kid, without swinging the sword, themselves?

Let's way Auburn says no -- which they certainly figure to do.

    Then what? (honest question).

If the NCAA was informed of the alleged violations and it was satisfied that nothing bad happened, it needs to put a gag order on MSU and UF and let Newton play out the season.

If any of this is new info, they need to investigate it NOW and not two years from now and punish the offending parties or clear them on all counts.

The NCAA doesn't ask schools to sit kids in eligibility situations. If a school thinks the kid might be ineligible, it's up to the school to sit the kid then apply to have him reinstated.

The NCAA can suspend kids from postseason play for on-court actions during NCAA playoff/tournament play though. Last one I can remember was a kid from Oklahoma who was suspended for one game in the NCAA tournament for throwing a cup of water at an official at the end of a tournament game the year before.

Sports attorney Donald M. Jackson --- who handled the Renardo Sidney eligibility case, among others --- just said on Finebaum's show that he sees no reason that Auburn should sit Newton based on what has been released publicly to this point.

Heard that. Finebaum seemed a bit disappointed.

He also implied there's a lot of info that hasn't been reported yet.

Yesterday, or was it Wednesday, he said the NCAA had suspended Newton too.
