Well they can't but they could make a team ineligible for playing without the NCAA's blessing. I'm sure they have plenty of back alley ways of taking care of things.

Sorry, but to say this story lost its timeliness after two months passed is ridiculous. Given the national championship and Heisman ramifications of this story, it would've been a shame if this story only came to light two, three, four years down the line when no one could do anything about it.

Mississippi State should give the finger to anyone mad about this story.

I say.. Cam is screwed either way.

I am hearing the NCAA wants Auburn to suspend him so they can quickly resolve his academic case. If he is eligible, they will let him play vs. Alabama. However, Auburn says no to suspending him.

Twenty years ago I covered Auburn for awhile. I remember they had a j-school (or at least a journalism major) that required students to serve internships. I was curious and asked a few kids what their internships had entailed (they didn't do those in my college days). Several kids shared that their major assignment was to ... tend bar at the football coaches' preseason retreat/poker games. I asked the SID (later AD) if he thought that was consistent with the educational intent of the internship. The indignation with which he greeted my question told me all I needed to know about priorities among the muckety-mucks at Auburn.

Now don't get me wrong, I think Auburn is a fine school. I think it is absolutely not unique in mis-placed priorities among higher-ups. But I absolutely will not be surprised if this blows up but good when all is said and done.

Now isn't that an interesting development?

Slive has a very important decision to make. Allow Auburn to play in the SEC Title Game for a shot at the BCS Title, or declare LSU the SEC West Champion, since it might be better to have LSU win that game and lobby for a BCS Title shot over Boise State and TCU, than to have Auburn stripped later of whatever they win this year. An Auburn loss to Bama, and I think a lot of voters will drop Auburn outside the top-5 to make sure they don't sniff the BCS Title Game.

But is Slive too busy covering his own ass in the federal investigation?

Newton is #15 on Mel Kiper's Big Board.

He will be the only winner in all of this it seems.

I hate the idea of LSU winning the West by default. But it would be fun to see their D vs. Oregon's O.

Except we wouldn't see that matchup. It would be Oregon-Boise State.

You still think BSU gets in over TCU?

TCU's number will only go down, finishing the season against winless New Mexico, while Boise State still has Fresno State (6-4), Nevada (9-1) and Utah State (4-6) to drive its numbers up. And that's not to mention picking up a couple more votes along the way while TCU can't make any more impressions.

A conference commissioner can't boot a team from postseason play because a player might be ineligible. Slive does that and the NCAA finds Newton was eligible all along and the SEC is toast.

I don't believe the SID granted internships to the J-school students. The J-school wanted its students to venture forth to newspapers in the state or elsewhere for their grunt training internships.
