NCAA tournament 2011 — running thread

The thing that I hated about it was that the ref's arm just rocketed upward as soon as he got to five. How often do you see that? NEVER. It looked like he thought he should be racing the kid and trying to beat his timeout call.

 

You know, Kansas has more wins in the NCAA tournament since 2000 than any other school. So KU chokes every year, except for when it doesn't.

 

Holy lord what a historically epic meltdown by the overhyped Big East.

You realize NONE of the 11 Big East teams reached the Sweet 16 by beating a non conference team in the second round. The only 2 BE teams still alive (Marquette and UConn) remain only because they got a fellow Big East team as their 2d round opponent.

Could this tournament possibly have delivered a more emphatic and prompt NO answer to that "did the Big East really deserve 11" question?

 

Just watched the 5-second call.

If it's true that you can't call a timeout after four seconds, then how fast the official blew his whistle is irrelevant. Because the Texas player had quit trying to inbound the ball at about four and a half seconds. The official could have waited another second to blow his whistle and nothing would have changed.

 

It'll be interesting to see how soon everybody forgets all this next season when it comes time to hype the Big East as the indomitable force again.

The 5-second call never should have happened. You can call a timeout after 4. Period.
It is so much better to be 1/8 of a count slow, than to be 1/16 of a count fast.
Don't let a horseshit call like that decide a 1-point nutcutter.

The Situation should e-mail his thanks to the Big East for ensuring that he didn't give the week's weakest performance after all.

 

You beat me to the punch on this. I think one win over a single-digit seed that's NOT in the Big East. The ACC (7-1), Big 10 (7-5), SEC (4-3) and Pac-10 (4-3) and even the Mountain West (4-1) all have better winning percentages in the tournament than the Big East (8-8), if I'm not mistaken. And these numbers are VERY unofficial, just quick glances at the bracket. Please feel free to correct any mistake.

The Big 12 (4-4) has the same record, but I think it has a much better chance at a happy finish with KU than the Big East with UConn and Marquette, although I do think UConn has a chance.

 

And coming up in their bracket: Seeds 10, 11 and 12. The kinds of teams Kansas loses to in the tourney (see: Bucknell, Northern Iowa).

Also, I'm with Charles Barkley. He said that Syrcause's loss to Marquette indicates that Syracuse wasn't actually that good.

My bracket is a cluster. One team left in the Southwest (Kansas) and yet I got it right in the Southeast and my Final Four teams are still alive.

 

Here's Barkley and Pitino debating tonight; Pitino's going to regret his promise about Notre Dame.

The best point Barkley makes is that Marquette beating Syracuse shows how bad the conference truly was as opposed to how deep it is. Maybe those "elite" teams weren't so elite.
