Exactly, it's those battles against sub .500 programs like Arkansas, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and South Carolina that really separate the good from the great.

Yeah, fuck those polls. I won't believe it until the numbers are counted.

The T-shirt industry is about to get a boost. This game will get a nickname in short order and somebody will have thousands printed by morning.

No doubt will be burning the midnight oil to get a leg up on the competition.

Had to write a headline for this tonight. It was not easy to keep it family-friendly.

There's a lot of truth there. I suppose it depends on who's ox is being gored. If you are an Ohio St. or Alabama fan, well of course accomplishments and tradition should count. If your team isn't among that pool of fifteen or twenty teams, though, you don't get that running start on the polls. The big dogs have the money, the facilities, the leverage in scheduling, the advantages that have accrued already. It seems unfair to throw in rankings based on accomplishments that have not yet happened.

Pre-season polls establish a narrative and are mostly determined by how many returning starters - particularly if a QB is returning - and the perceived ease of their schedule, are their tough games on the road or at home. Form typically holds as long as teams keep winning.
What's a crock is when a team gets "credit" for beating a "good team" that turns out to suck.
Almost seems like the key to polls this year is Cincinnatti. They got pummeled by Ohio State, and haven't lost since and teams that haven't been pummeled by OSU as badly are seen in a more favorable light. See also Texas losing to LSU.
