In the current system, we're pretty much forced to decide these things. Is the Big 12 better than the Pac-12? They both might have undefeated teams, so we actually do need to decide. We can all agree on the SEC being better than everyone, but is it so much better that LSU might deserve a title shot even if it loses in Tuscaloosa?

    In a word ... no.

You're saying no to the LSU thing, I assume. But what if LSU loses by a single score and Oregon knocks off Stanford and Oklahoma beats Oklahoma State in Bedlam? I don't think those are unimaginable scenarios by any means. Do you pick Boise State, a one loss team from another conference or LSU to face Alabama in the title game?

That's where figuring out which conference is strongest and whose schedule is strongest does come into play.

I understand where you're going with the conference deal, and you're right. I'm just looking at it that there's a lot more to the college football landscape than where the top 5-6 teams are going bowling. There are a lot more stories out there.

To a Big Ten team, going to Pasadena remains a pretty big thing.

I presume nothing in the BCS rules prevents two teams from the same conference for playing for the championship? LSU-Bama II would be a monster game. OTOH, Boise being in it means about a month of bombardment from its public relations department, which everyone else calls ESPN.

No, there is no rule that says two teams from the same conference cannot play for the title. There has been a push in the past to require that a team be its conference champion to play in the BCS game, but it has never gained traction among those who make those decisions.

Penn State has played the dregs of the Big Ten, and lost the only nonconference game it played against a team with a pulse. Next three games, Nebraska, at Wisconsin, at Ohio State. Now we will see what it's made of.

Listened to the fourth quarter of the Illini game on satellite radio, Had never heard PSU's broadcaster before. Quite frankly, he's not very good.

Penn State is going to get exposed in the next three games. They've played nobody.

Their basketball people are better. Unfortunately for them, the team isn't.

Steve Jones is their play-by-play man in both sports.
