My family vacationed for a few years on an island off the Gulf coast of Florida. We seriously considered buying a house there, but it wasn't cheap, and I never pulled the plug. Last time we were there, I was shocked how much higher the water was. That house will be gone within twenty years.

Taken two hours from high tide on Clearwater Beach, which is nowhere near the hurricane

Stephanie Abrams at Panama City Beach sounds way hotter than it actually is.

That picture reminds me how much I hated putting up storm shutters. They don't want to align properly, or some screw won't go all the way back in, or I cut my hand on the sharp metal, or . . . all of the above.

I dislike how that's almost become a punch line in parts of the country that have never had to deal with hurricanes. A friend in NW Florida posted on FB this morning that a local Waffle House had closed and I immediately felt sad and scared for her, having spent plenty of time in Florida myself.

No Waffle Houses in California, so we'll never know how big The Big One is when it swallows the state.

I'm going to make you even madder when I say that I mourn the loss of any Waffle House whether there's a storm or not.

    Please
If you've ever lived in Florida you know it's called Awful House

People who make fun of Waffle House have either never been there or don't drink.

I don't want to associate with either of those groups of people.

The Waffle House I used to frequent was blown off the map by Katrina.

Oh, I'm a fan of them. I lived in parts of the south where they'd be on opposite sides of the same interstate exit.
