I once transferred an angry parent who was threatening to cancel her subscription to our circulation department. No one appreciates good customer service anymore. Least of all the circulation department.

 

I actually responded to someone who sent me a bitchy email with horrible grammar and punctuation (I'm talking first grad shit here) about our Friday coverage (his local team was like 90 miles away and ended up pulling off a huge upset), and when I responded to explain why we couldn't cover it he actually sent me a well-reasoned and nice email. I was pleasantly surprised.

 

This was new (well for me). Local parent comes up to me after one of the worst volleyball teams in the area is eliminated in the first round of regionals complaining that the coach wouldn't play the seniors and I should write about that. I managed not to ask if it was because they stunk, and said I wasn't doing a story. She then got all huffy and said she would write a letter to the editor - it was great, she thought that was really sticking it to me.

 

why do you hate seniors?

 

After all, they work hard, too!

We've sold a few ads, here and there, to teams that thought our sports calendar was insufficient to their tryout announcements, etc.

Makes me wonder why we have the free calendar at all ...
