And Fred Thompson was a terrible candidate. Just terrible.

I was excited about the possibility of his candidacy.

He was the keynote speaker at the National Restaurant Association show a few years ago.

He just winged his speech and it sucked. Rambled on with his life story, but with no actual point.

And nothing he said was relevant to the audience he was addressing.

I knew he was done right then and there and jumped off that band wagon. It's a cliche, but it's true. These guys need the "fire in the belly" and Fred didn't have it.

Yeah, I've seen a lot of campaigns where everyone was excited and committed... but just not very good at it, including the candidate. I can understand that.

I've never seen anyone -- particularly early in a campaign -- who clearly didn't give a shit quite like Fred. Why bother?

Insufficient energy, at best. Just damn lazy, at worst.

He actually thought he could simply show up, go through the motions, and everyone would swoon.

Even worse than the guys who won't run unless they're drafted . . . i. e. unless my ass is kissed
every inch of the way and I don't have to do a lick of work to get the nom, I ain't playin'.

    Egomaniacial douchery at its worst.

This is why I like our system of electing a President. The staff is a product of the candidate, and while not all-encompassing, the campaign is not a bad proxy for the challenges of the office.

    2012 Presidential Matchups:
National Poll: Gingrich 45% Obama 43%
    Rasmussen Reports
The Newt Gingrich surge has moved him to the top of the polls in Iowa, big gains in New Hampshire and now a two-point edge over President Obama in a hypothetical general election match-up. A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of Likely Voters finds Gingrich attracting 45% of the vote while President Obama earns support from 43%.

Remember, this poll is a snapshot. It doesn't take into account Gingrich's penchant for self-destruction.
Romney's still the only Republican capable of beating Obama.

I have a question for the condervatives on this board. Do you really think that Gingrich can be a good President. I don't think he has ever meet an invasion he did not like. I fear more Iraq's. Does anyone think that Gingrich would have the discipline to slowplay Libya like Obama did or would he go into a similar situation with guns blazing?

    Honestly, I have my doubts.

He' never run a large organization. He seems to make some rash decisions.

He thinks out loud -- a lot. That wouldn't work well for foreign diplomacy or the world financial markets.

There are times where I think he's exactly what this country needs right now and other times where he scares me a bit.

I would love to see Newt-Obama over Romney-Obama, especially in debates.
