Of course, following Newt's logic, by the time of the American Civil War, both sides fighting were an invented peoples as well.

Well, if Newt knows anything, it's the Civil War, as evidenced by his heartfelt passionate alternate-history books in which the South wins.

Yeah, that's what we need as a President, a guy who wishes the nation had been overthrown by traitors 150 years earlier. God Bless the CSA.

    Yeah, it really did suck.

I read one of the first widely-circulated Civil War alternate history books in the 1960s, by historian McKinlay Kantor, with the imaginative title, "If the South Had Won the Civil War," and despite being very short and probably light on details, it was 1000 x better than the "C.S.A." movie, which beat about a half-dozen running jokes way into the ground.

The Kantor book came out in 1960, and wrapped up with the heartwarming conclusion that, spurred by the threat of Soviet Alaska (never purchased in 1868) the steady march of social progress (he had the C.S.A., despite winning the war, deciding to abolish slavery in 1880), the U.S.A., C.S.A. and Republic of Texas decide to open reunification talks in the spring of 1961.

Just think, under that alternate history, Saraya Heathova-Palinovich would be a middle-level administrator in the Alaskan S.S.R. bureaucracy.

Rubio is now the pronounced favorite in the GOP VP marketplace.

The international books are already virtually guaranteed a huge windfall at the conclusion of this buisness, as one GOP whack-a-mole after another has stuck his (or her) head up and gotten hammered into oblivion. The sucker money from all the wishful thinkers that flowed to Perry during the week and a half he took to shoot himself in both feet could have probably supported a small African nation for a year.

If Condi Rice were available, Rubio would be abruptly told to get lost.

Yeah, that's what the world needs . . . another Fredo enabler on a national ticket.

I'm not at all sold that Rubio would accept, should the VP-ship be offered. Just another interesting subplot . . .

    Why do you say that?

Condi is tainted by the Bush foreign policy, and has never been seen as a "true conservative".

Rubio is loved by Conservatives, plus, if the Republicans have a chance to eat into the Democratic electoral block, it's by targeting Hispanics, nor African-Americans -- especially when the Democrats have an African-American at the top of the ticket.
