Hell, that's what happened in 2008.

I don't think Newt has been waiting around for his turn, while I think that was definitely the case with Dole in 1996 and McCain in 2008.

If it was Newt's turn, the people who some consider "the base" wouldn't be lining up to bash him.

    Maybe it'll be Newt's turn in 2016.

Now that Ron Paul's apparently racist past is catching up to him, he's next to fall like a rock...

Hell, that might help him in Iowa. :D

And needless to say it won't bother the vast majority of the Paul base the slightest bit. They'll simply go back to jacking off to their shrines to Ayn Rand.

    Gingrich lowers expectations,
shoots for top three or four in Iowa
CNN, by Shawna Shepherd & Ashley Killough

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich on Thursday seemed to be lowering expectations for the upcoming Iowa caucuses, saying he'd be happy with a third or fourth place finish. "My goal is to be the top three or four [in Iowa]," the former House speaker said at a campaign stop in Richmond, Virginia. http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2011/12/22/gingrich-lowers-expectations-shoots-for-top-three-or-four-in-iowa/

Santorum's 15-minute stopwatch is poised at the starting gate. He's the last of the anti-Romneys.

In the meantime, Newt's reversion into a salamander is complete. Paul is riding high in Iowa.

A few days old, which granted is an eternity in this day and age of real-time news. But if Mittens finishes second in corn country, he is in great shape.

It has been obvious since last spring Romney would be the nominee. He's the only candidate the Republicans had who isn't guaranteed to get vaporized by Obama. Ergo, no matter how much they don't like or trust him, Republicans were going to pick Romney, as winning is better than losing. All the poll noise was just that.

Newt Gingrich is at this very moment smuggling a Patriot missile system into Gaza via the Suez Canal. He has it in his shaving kit - along with several gels and liquids in excess of the 3 oz. TSA travel limit. He has a razor in his boot, and the launch codes in the fillings of his teeth. He has been in touch with the Guardian Council of Iran regarding their upcoming production of 'HMS Pinafore,' and wants it known that every mullah and sheik of the great desert; every nuclear scientist of Pakistan and North Korea; every black bag operator from Morocco to the subcontinent to the Sea of Okhotsk are welcome to join him for brunch this Sunday at the Cici's pizza in Annapolis. This is intelligence sourced at the highest levels of the CIA and Mossad and the Ringling Brothers. Transmission ends.

To win the White House, you are absolutely correct. But I've read where Republics were willing to write off the presidency to win the Senate and shore up the House, and win a bunch of downticket races in state offices. The reasoning being that Obama was good for business. Romney winning the nomination queers that deal.
