How does having a Bachmann, Gingrich or Paul help downticket? Any of them are the nominee, they have plenty of stuff they can be shredded 10 ways to Sunday about, causing candidates to distance themselves.

Dooley is right. It's not that the other nominees were sure losers of their own race, it's that they would lose by so much it'd put other Republicans in jeopardy. We are in a situation where both parties are extremely unpopular (can't imagine why). This means both sides are vulnerable to a sudden shift in the wind that could wreck 'em, and have to be cautious.
It's easy to image the eurozone crisis causing another financial panic and catapulting Romney to the White House. Gingrich? No. He's just too erratic for people to turn to in a crisis.
BTW, it's also easy to imagine the nutbars in the House shutting the government down over refusal to allow oil drilling on the National Mall catapulting Obama into a second term. Risk everywhere.

The thought is these more rock-ribbed conservatives will bring out the true believers who'll vote straight GOP. While Romney will bring out the ticket-splitters within the GOP who'll cause the House to flip while the harder right gives this election a miss.

I guess that's possible, but a Bachmann-type would mobilize the left, whereas Romney is as hard to inspire people against as for. Obama has also been bleeding Independent support, which could well go to Romney. If one of the whackjobs gets the Republican nomination, those people either vote Democrat or stay home.

The most offensive thong Ron Paul ever did was sire Rand Paul.

Hard to think of anything more offensive than Ron Paul in a thong "siring" Rand Paul.

Epic and spectacular fail. Even better, I can't edit posts on my phone.

When this stuff first blew up in his first congressional races in the mid-1990s, he attempted to defend/rationalize the statements, explaining that young black thugs really ARE very fast, so indeed it might be a good idea to carry a gun in your car (unregistered and unlicensed, of course). No denial that he wrote or at least approved them.

More recently, he's going full Sgt. Schultz: "I knew notheenk!!! NOTHEENK!! I was a very busy man!! No time to read that stuff!! Just because it went out on a funds-soliciting newsletter with "RON PAUL" emblazoned across the top in huge letters, what makes you think I had anything to do with it!!!"
