Watching these OL run sub-5.00s in the 40 is ridiculous. Almost as ridiculous as their decision to wear tights.

Almost as ridiculous as actually watching the combine, unless you are being paid to it.

Maybe Shockey or some of the more-seasoned NFL followers can explain the attraction of the combine. I certainly don't get it. At least nowadays, seems like there's so much info on players out there already ...

The combine is the Sundance of the NFL. Talking heads get to "discover" some name from some nowhere college and be the first person to blab about him.

A question about the QBs. Considering Barkley was projected to be a first round pick last year, has he gotten worse, or was he just overvalued last year?

I think there is great value of being able to compare players all in one place. The subtle differences are more likely to jump out
    at you.

Mort says Manli Te'o "didn't seem sweaty" during his presser.

Can't wait to see that on the crawl.

The combine exists because it is a chance to measure all the players under the exact same conditions, making their numbers directly comparable. Otherwise, 40 times can be altered by weather, wind, whether it's run on a track in spikes or on a field in football shoes, how accurately the coursle is measured, etc., and other workouts can have variations as well. Plus they all get times from the same watches (though the teams use their own as well), allowing for a direct comparison.

Also, individual workouts and "pro days" are set up for the player(s) to succeed. If the wind is blowing, it will be at the player's back, and whatever setup is most advantageous or comfortable for the player will be used. At the combine, the conditions are set up by the league to allow for a baseline comparison -- indoors, exact league-approved measurements, equipment and ground rules.

Basically, they know exactly what they're getting. The only variable is the player.

That's why it's valuable to scouts.

attraction of the combine? for whom? media? players? nfl/teams?

it's a bonanza for the beat/league reporters 'cause it's a chance for ALL, no matter how big or small, equal access EVERYONE who plays a starring role in the nfl draft -- the most popular non-game stretch in all the major sports leagues. folks will be writing draft related stories for two freakin' months so it helps fill loads of space, and the access to nfl head coaches/gms is right there for anyone seeking to get to know these folks for stories down the road, and face daxw timw us nonstuff face time is essential to developing league-wide sources. you can also find almost every asst coach in one of the popular saloons during the week.

the usefullness for the players, agents and coaching staffs is selfexplanatorym no?

It's easy to say they should trade the pick. You have to have a willing partner (preferably more than one to help create value). With this class it's not likely other teams will want to give up anything of value to move up.
