Did anyone have a better first round than the 49ers? Solomon Thomas was a solid pick and expected to go that high, but Reuben Foster at 31 in addition makes John Lynch look really good. You know he never expected to have a chance at Foster.

Not the game I would have predicted to have two of the draft's top three picks -- and three of the top eight if McCaffrey had played -- but THAT'S COLLEGE FOOTBALL!!!!!

Opinions may vary. From SF Chronicle's 49ers writer:

I don't mind posting it as a data point - and I think that's all I did. And the data point of him being a one year starter behind a guy who didn't set the world on fire. and an 8-5 record. and UNC's offense regressing last year.

Hell, the only warning sign that is missing is that he didn't direct an Air Raid offense.

Foster was compared to Ray Lewis. But if he does not put on weight like Lewis did (totally organic I'm sure), he'll get swallowed up by NFL OL.

Myles Garrett, the No. 1 pick, was tied with six players for FOURTH in the SEC in sacks last season.

As for Trubisky and "data points," he led the ACC in QB rating, TD-INT ratio and completion percentage.

Concerns about Foster aside, the Niners fleeced the Bears to switch one place in the draft, got a quality pick at 3 and found a way back into the first round. They did pretty damn good. And to recognize they needed to plug more holes than just QB was good.

Sam Bradford led the NFL in completion percentage last year.

I will go on record - Trubisky will be a flaming bust.

That may be true, but judging him by wins and losses in college would be a mistake.

Garret was AP's 2nd team All SEC, the 3rd DE on the ALL SEC coaches roster.
Allen was SEC Defensive player of the year.

I dont know enough about it to have an informed opinion but if all to drafting was to take your position of need from the the available All Americans and POY award winners, you could halve the pro scouting departments.

Watching film, he's got Tebow's mechanics with a slightly stronger arm. Kid needs a lot of work.
