I don't see how Tampa and Tennessee can pass over Mariota and Winston in whatever order without losing whatever season ticket renewals they have.

I don't see Mariota slipping any further than the Jets at No. 6. I know it's early and we were all saying the same thing about Bridgewater and Manziel a year ago, but I really think these guys are going to go 1-2, maybe not to Tampa and Tennessee, but to someone.

I think if the Bucs keep the pick, they're taking Winston.

Not necessarily. Depends on what it costs and how much you like him. Was it worth trading an entire draft for Ricky Williams or Robert Griffin?

Houston passed on hometown hero Vince Young and Reggie Bush and lived to tell the tale.

Still way, way too early to tell.

No and no. I don't think that's what we're talking about though. If the Eagles can get a No. 2 for Foles, they may be able to trade a No. 1 and two No. 2s this year and next year's No. 1 for the No. 1 pick.

That's a lot of potential starters. You'd better be pretty damned sold on a guy to do that.

Figure it this way... When the Falcons traded up to get Vick and when the Giants traded Rivers for Eli Manning, the price was that year's No. 1, the following year's No. 1 and a No. 3.

But those were teams picking fifth and fourth in the draft. With the Eagles picking 20th, one would assume they would have to ante up a bit more to get the pick.

If that's where they're going, you're right. But, again, for that price and with that pick, they need to be 100 percent sold that the guy they're going up to get (again, if that is indeed what they're considering doing) is going to be a franchise QB to do that. You'd think Kelly knows Mariota as well as anyone in the league -- including his flaws. I wonder if he considers the kid a can't-miss prospect.

Of course, the draft boards are far from finalized at this point. By draft day, they might not have to trade up nearly that high to get him.

You're right. Obviously in the case of Vick and Eli Manning, the player teams the were trading up to get were worth it. But the Chargers moving up to take Leaf and the Redskins moving up to take RG3, not so much... I don't see either of these guys as can't miss prospects.

There's no such thing as a can't miss prospect. There are guys with very high probabilities of making it big, but that's it. And if you sit around waiting for one, you can go without a decent quarterback (and thus without winning) for a long, long time.

Just an expression, but... OK, then before you trade the ranch to get to No. 1 to take a guy, you'd better be pretty damned convinced he's one of those guys with a very high probability of making it big.
