I agree. There aren't many better quarterbacks who are available (at that price) that have his upside.

I wonder how similar it is to the way all those deals are that go down on NBA draft day but can't be officially announced for a week or so. I just seems to be a strange way to handle things...

I don't think anybody backs out. The deal makes too much sense for both teams (assuming it is the Chiefs...).

What if, for instance, the Browns hear it's a third-rounder and they call and check if the Niners will take a second-rounder, or maybe a third-rounder this year and next? Why wouldn't the Niners move to that deal?

That is when it becomes a matter of honor among thieves.

    And there is none.

It serves the 49ers very well to put this story out there and see if they can increase the offer.

Well, it depends on whether it's been agreed to or not. I would like to think that if LaCanfora's story is true, that the Niners would honor what's been agreed upon. If it's not true, I'm sure they would welcome any and all offers.

Wasn't it a similar deal with the Pats and Chiefs a couple years back? Belichick agreed to deal Cassel to the Chiefs for a No. 2 and then some team came in later and offered a No. 1 and Belichick still made the deal with KC and his buddy Pioli.

Business is business and you have to weigh the immediate gain (if any) vs. loss of credibility. On paper it appears that credibility is a small thing to sacrifice for a higher pick but people don't forget, especially smart ones, and say the Niners burn the Chiefs/Dorsey. Next year the Chiefs want to unload (cannot even think of anyone Niners would want) and the Niners would love the guy. Chiefs trade him for a 4th rounder and the Niners do not even get a phone call; why? Chiefs don't want to work with them.

Trades are extremely rare in the NFL anyway. And if the Chiefs (or any team) turn down a better deal because the other guys are meanies, then the Chiefs (or any team) deserve to finish in last place.

Its not about "meanies" its about "why should I waste my time and believe you this time?"

Because in my scenario the 49ers would be offering the better deal.

I figure there is a "deal in place" but neither team is bound to it. Too much can change. Big Drunk Ben could crash his motorcycle while raping a college girl this weekend, and suddenly the Steelers are in the market.
