Mamula's a name that always come up when people are talking about guys whose combine showing far outstripped their production, but that's unfair. He was a GREAT college player (17 sacks as a senior at BC), and pretty good in the NFL before he got hurt.

As for Hunt, he's been on the radar for a while just because of his back story (former Junior Olympic world record holder in the discus). He's got tremendous value as a kick-blocker if nothing else. But he's very tall and relatively thin, so you have to wonder what kind of leverage he'll have against a 6-5, 330-pound NFL tackle.

If that happens, then this becomes a bad deal. But they're looking at right now, not a few years from now. Not defending what the Chiefs did. Just trying to think about it from their perspective is all.

Wow. That's a nice haul for the Niners.

Where are you getting two seconds? Schefter's tweet says it's a second this year and a "conditional mid-round pick" in 2014.

They'll put some weight on him before the season starts. And Hunt -- it's Margus, BTW, not Mangus -- was a beast on the field this season.

    Yep. Chiefs overpaid.

Is Smith that much of an upgrade for Kansas City?

Yes he's that much of an upgrade. But it's still too much to pay. I would have thought the second by itself was too much. Even if the conditional is a fourth-rounder, a 2 and a 4 is too much for a game manager without any playmaking skills.

He was the third-highest-rated passer in the NFL at the time of his injury/benching. In his last two seasons he has thrown for 30 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. And he won a playoff game in legendary fashion. I would say that is an enormous upgrade over the vaunted Matt Cassel/Brady Quinn tandem, yes.

How he does outside the Harbaugh Cocoon is a huge question. And there was always the discussion about whether the 49ers really were title contenders with him. But I don't think anyone can argue that he isn't a full-fledged and very serviceable NFL starter somewhere, which makes him much more than what the Chiefs have now.

A tidbit that I always find interesting: It's hard to believe since he is entering his ninth NFL season, but Smith right now is just shy of his 29th birthday. He is younger than Brandon Weeden.

Banks in his mock draft has Philly taking Chance Warmack. On surface seems ridiculous if Kelly is going to run his system. It's all about pace and getting the ball out in open space.
Warmack would be underused and wiped out after 5 plays.

I remember when Weeden was playing for the Columbus Catfish in the Dodgers' system back in the early-2000's.

Harbaugh offered to coach Alex Smith remotely, which would continue to make him a productive player, but Bay Area companies do not allow this, and so the Cheifs had to lower their offer.
