The Steelers should have taken early last year, and hopefully the same opportunity will arise in either the third or second round this year.

I'm still stunned the SF pulled off getting two high picks for Smith. I'm guessing that the conditional pick next year is based on KC making the playoffs... It would be similar to what the Jets did in the Favre trade. Since I don't expect KC to make the playoffs, the Niners will get the second pick of the second round and a third-round pick... Not too shabby...

I don't think KC did that badly either. Smith was the best QB out there (draft or free agency) or at least is the QB who is in the best position to help a team win next season. What QB would have been there at No. 34? I think Barkley will be gone by then, but I'd probably rather have Alex Smith anyway.

I'm a Chiefs fan, and I think they way overpaid for Smith.

Smith will be good enough to take K.C. out of the running for the top pick next year, when the QB class has to be better than it was this year, right?

I don't follow college FB religiously, but what I saw of Manziel makes me wish he was eligible to come out this year. A smaller version of Kaepercluck might be a franchise QB or he might not, but I'd like the chance to find out with the Chiefs.

At best with the trade for Smith, I won't have to watch the Cassel/Quinn horror show in the upcoming season. That's something, I guess.

Where was their past relationship? I can't find any career intersection between the two. Trestman hasn't even been in the NFL since Cutler entered the league.

    Agreed.

There are Kansas City fans upset, however. I don't get it. Take one at No. 1 just because you can? Then there is the "another San Francisco retread" bitchfest. Montana was a heck of a pick up and DeBerg was servicable. Regardless, what does it have to do with the present?

Correct. IIRC, Trestman was on the North Carolina State staff at the time.

Ah. I did not know that. No doubt the life lessons about holding your head up high are what keeps Jay Cutler on the even keel now.

Speaking of Tebow, btw, the Jets appear to be planning to acquire Brady Quinn, which is so very Jets.

Criticize them all you like, but they are in prime position to secure a BCS bowl bid in 2007, 2008 or 2009.
