So far new Jets GM seems about as exciting as dry toast. They guy is so bland. You have to wonder about a guy who only now in his 50's becomes a GM.

I've seen this, too, and I don't get it. Are they getting Drew Brees? No. But given what's out there right now, in free agency and the draft, and what's on the roster right now, what's the better alternative? Jason Campbell, Tavaris Jackson, Seneca Wallace? Reach for a third-round QB talent with the top pick and put him in an impossible position to succeed right off the bat? I'd like to take the most vocal fanbois and pin them down for what exactly their plans are.

As is, getting Joeckel with the No. 1 pick, and getting an experienced NFL quarterback with playoff experience for effectively the price of a second-round pick (plus another that you could categorize as "future considerations", is a pretty solid shot they are taking.

I think the general consensus is that Kansas City is more like a 5-11 or 6-10 team right now that just fell apart because of the worst coaching in the league and some other circumstances (Belcher, Cassel's injury). They had six Pro Bowl players, right? But Crennel wasn't just bad, he really wasn't even there on the sidelines.

So if that hypothesis is correct, maybe they are two or three games better with Smith and now they have something to work with.

I had no idea being exciting was a requirement (or even preferred) to be an effective NFL GM.

Not saying he'll be effective (I have no idea, really), but I wouldn't necessarily think that's a huge negative-- unless you're trying to interview him.

I would have had no problem making the trade for the No. 2 -- put Smith in as your second-round choice and you should be pretty happy with that. The three next year seems pretty steep. Of course, if Smith leads the Chiefs to the playoffs this season, the extra choice -- even if it's a No. 2 -- would be totally worth it, no?

And as stated on another thread, getting Smith and the top OL or DL in the draft is not a bad place to be for KC in this draft.

Don't forget Steve Bono and Elvis Grbac were former 49ers as well...

I think the Chiefs gave up too much for Alex Smith, but I still think the Chiefs will probably be the most improved team in the NFL next season. I know that's not saying much when they were 2-14 last season, but I would not be surprised at all if they win 7-8 games next season.

With as many picks as San Francisco now has, I fully expect them to either trade up in the first round or trade for someone like Harvin or Revis. Even if they lose Goldson to free agency, they're not going to have too many roster spots to fill. Having a lot of picks is great if you have a lot of spots, but I'd be surprised if there is room for 6-7 new guys.

Maybe they have just been stockpiling for such a moment, but it seems very unlike Harbaugh and Baalke to go after the highest-priced free agent -- especially one who wouldn't be part of their meat-and-potatoes physical game. They have been pretty good at picking up talent in the lower price ranges at those positions (Carlos Rogers for example).

I don't know the talent landscape in the draft, but if they do anything there I think it's trading up for a big defensive lineman. They were pretty weak on that, especially on the interior, and everyone can always use depth.

Yeah, I don't know of any free agent that just looks like a great fit for them. I could see them going after one of the older guys (Reed, Woodson...) to rent for a year if they're willing to play cheap, but they probably won't... Harvin would be a great fit on the field, but he has other issues and wants huge $$$. Is Revis the same player he was? I don't know... I wonder if Asomugha would go there if Philly cuts him.

I think they'll take a D-lineman in the first or second round. Having two picks so close together gives them quite a bit of flexibility. I could see them trading out of the first for a first-rounder next year. That's usually a decent gamble that has paid of dividends for the Raiders in the past and I know the Niners did that themselves one year. They got a Pro Bowl lineman out of it, but I think it basically ended up being the No. 28 pick that year for the No. 7 pick the next year.

Wouldn't mind seeing the 49ers kick the tires on Richard Seymour -- one- or two-year guy, maybe a low price, maybe part of a rotation instead of a full-timer.

Unless you have a fan base like The Jets that's wants to feel there is a light at the end of the tunnel and is inspired and confident in the GM.

    I'm not impressed so far.

Chiefs went from Crennel and Cassell to Reid and Smith. Plus, it seems like they're going to get a pretty good offensive tackle.

What exactly are Chiefs fans complaining about?

Completely agree. But when you've been as bad for as long as KC has (at least from a playoff success standpoint) they get pretty jaded and bitter.
