I doubt it was on purpose. Dumervil is not a $12 million player. He's not going to get anything better than what the Broncos offered from somewhere else. He was taking a pay cut either way, so why not stay with Denver? From the Broncos perspective, they have Von Miller as their #1 sack guy.

The dead money that this snafu is going to cost the Broncos is pretty big. My guess is that Dwight Freeney's phone was blowing up about a minute after the deadline passed and they hadn't gotten the paperwork.

    Anatomy of a Contractual Fuckup.

I'd read a minute by minute account on Grantland or wherever.

Agent now says he didn't get the revised contract until 1:42 p.m. MDT and that it was faxed back at 1:55 p.m. Timestamp on returned contract to Dove Valley shows 2:06 p.m. MDT.

    This story is getting bizzaro.

Fire the grunt who sprung the fax clock ahead 66 minutes.

Dumervil may be the first defensive end ever to sack himself.

Agent gets credit with half a sack.

It may be true that he can't get a better deal now, but why would his earnings since 2010 have anything to do with this? Like he should help the Broncos out because they've been so nice to him, is that what you're getting at?

Very strange story. Why are the Broncos waiting till 18 (or 35 or whatever) to fax the contract to him in the first place?

    Dumb and Dumerville:

He can't get a better deal. And I would be willing to bet he isn't even getting the $8 million now. Michael Bennett got $5 million. Cliff Avril got 2 years at $15 million. Last year, Avril turned down 3 years at $30 million. It is a SOFT market for d-ends.

Dumervil fucked himself. And the Broncos fucked themselves. Plenty of blame to go around, I would bet. BOTH sides let the game of chicken go on too long and even though Dumervil was ready to swerve, there wasn't enough time left.

This thing gets even funnier, too. From what someone just told me, Dumervil was at a Kinkos somewhere in Miami trying to fax back his part of the contract.

Perhaps everyone should pop some Ecstasy tonight and agree to terms tomorrow. Let's just all pretend this never happened.

It will be interesting to see what deal he can get. In any case, MileHigh might want to re-think the "dumb-ass agent" comment. Sounds like the Broncos changed the deal and then sent it late enough that they hoped the agent wouldn't notice. Broncos would have been more than happy to screw Dumervil on that. So, fuck them.
